  • Hi Rich,

    Thank you for the advice!
I'll start having a read - it's not a specialist website. So basically i'm going to have to pay people to market it for me?

    Simon.
  • Register your site at dmoz.org - You will find that your site is picked up much quicker with the search engines. And it's free.
  • Hi Rick, I tried doing that last night, but I couldn't find the submission form? Every time I clicked on "Suggest a site" it just took me to the instruction page!

No you can do it yourself or outsource bits of it. I just got Brad Callen's latest search engine tricks ebook. It's very good. He made several million from high listing sites last year. You can get it in the WSO section of warriorforum for a special forum only price of $10 (£5.20).

Sorry meant to add the quickest way to get your site shooting up the rankings is to list it on craigslist (google likes this site), add a video to youtube with a link to your website (you can use powerpoint with camtasia to do this or ask for someone to do it on elance.com), answer relevant questions with your site as the source at yahoo answers and finally get a blog at wordpress and post some tips/help in relation to your website with a link to your website.

First thing, sign up to Google Analytics and Google Webmaster. They're free, you just need to sign up. They'll provide you with a lot of information especially regarding your site being spidered.

It'll break down the problems the spider may have etc... You'll also want to think about creating a Sitemap for your website and submitting that to Google via Google Webmaster.

Apart from coding your site cleanly (ie clean url's, always lowercase url's, meta description and keywords, clear accessible links etc...) the main thing to improve your ranking it to be linked by a reputable site.

For example if bbc.co.uk linked to your site it would boost your ranking quite a bit. However johnsmithsblog.co.uk wouldn't give you such a boost.
