Upgrading PAYG Orange phone

I added extra credit to my wife's phone to activate enough credit over the past 6 months for an upgrade reward covering the cost of a new £9.99 handset from the website.

This has now arrived but I have all kinds of trouble activating it. I followed the instructions to register the SIM card online, and the old sim card was seemingly cancelled, but despite having the new phone with the sim card switched on as instucted, nothing happened.

After several bearly intellegible phone calls, reading out SIM and IMEI numbers out several times I am still without the new phone working. I've been advised to wait another 24 hours, but I'm not hopeful.

Why does Orange have such a complicated system? I myself am with Virgin PAYG, recently got a free handset with their reward scheme so I just removed by SIM from the old phone and put it in the new one. Seems a little simpler to me. I would have done this with Orange, but the free upgrade credit is not activated unless the new SIM is properly registered, and the phone is also blocked unless properly activated by Orange.

It's put me off Orange and my wife is quite rightly miffed that she's lost her mobile number for a couple of days so far and has probably missed calls and texts.
