Surely it can't be right that something that I would expect to last 5 years has lasted three months and all they are offering me is a patch up job.

That's up to them and that's the law. If you're not happy about the quality of the repair after it's done then that's a different matter. But they're under no obligation to replace or refund in the first instance. If you refuse the repair then that's basically the end of the matter and as far as you can take it.

For what it's worth I agree totally with you - but unfortunately I believe that Rex and Hollydays are correct, you aren't legally entitled to any more than a repair. I'm afraid that cost no longer is an indication of quality - I've had some very hardwearing items from Primark yet my son often pays a fortune for labelled tat (not saying your coat is - just how things are now in the world of retail).

You could try contacting the manufacturer to see if they care - but don't hold out much hope!

Personally - I find it quite sad that some people think it's OK that a coat that expensive doesn't even see out the cold weather!

Your post was a bit pointless in that respect but if you've nothing better to do with your time....

My post was my opinion which is something you get on forums. As regards to my time I've spent a lot less time typing out my posts on this thread than you did with the above response (to myself)......................

That makes your point about my time a bit..................pointless.

That would be sad but that doesn't apply to this thread AFAIK as noone has said anything of that sort and I don't think I could guess what posters actually "think" unless they stated it explicitly.

Tha manufacturer suggestion may be the best route if the OP isn't happy with accepting a repair. Many manufacturers go beyond what they are legally obliged to do which is in contrast usually with retailers who do less than what they are obliged to do.

  • Well I guess that wraps it up. I'm going to pay a decent tailor to fix it as best he can and I'll try and learn from the experience! Thanks to everyone for enlightening me.

Kind of cutting your nose to spite your face there. You're preemptively assuming a bad job would be made by the retailer. Personally I'd let them do it for free, at least if it wasn't satifactory then I could still demand a replacement under the SOGA for not being able to repair it sufficiently.

Agree totally, why on earth do you want to pay for the repair when you've already lost out? Also, as SS says - you would forfeit any rights you have.

SS - your response to my post - sorry I wasn't very clear, not accusing people on here, but the shop that seems to sell shoddily made expensive clothes and only offer to patch it. :D

Having said that - there have been a few pointless responses!;)

I kind of thought that maybe that's what you meant and to be honest I completely agree and am not actually surprised by the shop's response (and that is sad to have such low expectations of the shops). I am kind of surprised that they offered to repair instead of either disputing it or offering a refund/replacement. To repair it seems like more hassle for the retailer overall, but then they don't always act logically (retailers).
