and don't need the luggage space the tank takes.

Problem is that Gordon in No 11 can wipe out the tax advantage at a stroke if he wishes.

    ..or a spare wheel ;)

I understand that the duty on lpg is definitely going to rise over the next few years...

In a way, I feel that more benefit should be placed on the bio fuels like veg oil - they are non toxic, biodegradable, very low polluting and broadly Co2 neutral. It does seem odd that a petrol distillate (i.e. a fossil fuel) has duty levied at 6p/litre, whilst biodiesel and veg oil is 27.1p/litre. For reference, standard diesel is taxed at 47.1p/litre.

I have been put off lpg cos the channel tunnel and the ferry companies refuse to transport lpg converted vehicles :-(

Eurotunnel certainly do not allow LPG vehicles, but AFAIK there are no LPG restrictions on ferries.
  • Paul, you say you live in a rural area. Do you use heating oil for heating. If so maybe another reason for bio diesel!
We made a basic heat exchanger on my old vw caddy, it worked fine but never got round to the solanoid fitting.

Were running 28-second grade, which is kerosene - would have to make some modifications to the burner to run any type of diesel.

Thing is, heating oil is only taxed with 5% VAT, it's only 30p-odd per litre, so veg oil or a derivitive would be quite a bit dearer.
  • Why would it be dearer if you made it yourself! You could make for your car and for home heating. With no duty on heating apart from the vat you should be able to make it for that. Would you still have to pay vat if you made yourself for heating?

I shouldn't think so, but you've still got to source oil to convert and new oil is 40p+ per litre...

I suppose you could convert waste oil, but I don't know of any sources round here. Don't know what the neighbours would think of the niff either

    You are joking of course?

Ring the VAT office to enquire and give them a smile.

New oil wouldn't be an option because of the price.

I would have thought if the company you were buying waste oil from was vat registered, then they would have to charge you vat anyway as it would no longer be for food use?

    Probably at 17.5% too _pale_

I have a Range Rover on LPG, costs about 39.9p/l and does the same mpg as petrol. the car starts on petrol and then changes to gas when the correct operating temp is reached. only probs are that it goes through oxgen sensors about every 18 months and that you are limited to which garages are able to work on the gas part of your car (and there are some real cowboys out there, I had to sue the garage from which I bought the car, when they said that the conversion invalidated the warranty- they had the conversion done for me before I collected the car!) Finding gas is never a problem and you do still have a full petrol tank.
  • I'm thinking of changing my car in the next couple of months. Does anyone know if you can buy an LPG from new? If so what make??
