Hi all . With the advent of higher fuel prices iam beggining to think I may convert to gas on my two cars. One of the cars is a diesel . Is this possible on a diesel ? I know that there are only a few garages locally which sell the gas at the moment but I think its around 50 -60p cheaper per litre than both petrol and diesel! - May be worth looking at if you intend to keep a car for a long enough period to cover the installation of the gas conversion.

I saw autogas at 29.9p per litre yesterday, with quadruple points, at a Jet garage in Sheffield a few days ago, it's a very attractive option now petrol is 90p+
Yes, there are conversion for diesel, but it's not as cheap as a petrol conversion. I believe they run on a diesel/lpg mixture, not sure of the ratio, and it actually increases the power output of the engine.0 -
You can find your nearest filling stations here -

or download a pdf here

and autoroute overlays here -

Hope you find these useful :j0 -
can you really do a gas conversion on a diesel? i thought not, mainly because of how the fuel is combusted - gas needs a spark rather than compression?if it's more than 10 stone, and that hairy, it's probably not a dog...it may be a wookie.0

Apparently the conversion uses the diesel to ignite the lpg, hence the mix. I seem to remember that the injectors are replaced with dual injectors and an addition lpg fuelling system, hence the high cost.0 -

If you have the time and are interested maybe go down the avenue of bio diesel and making your own. Or a straight veg oil twin tank conversion.0

The veg oil route is a really great idea, I'd forgotten about that one!
Veg oil conversions here, DIY or fitted -

There are other companies round the country that do these, and loads of info on the 'net...0 -
Is it true you use twice as much gas to get the same sort of milage as running on petrol, or have just plucked that out of the air? Still cheap though!
But i'd go down the veg oil route, just seems easier. Rape veg oil is around 40p a litre at the supermarket but will be cheaper in bulk, you still have to pay duty on it which I think is around 25p a litre. You would have to set up an account with the Customs and Excise and declare how much you have used.
Its worth reading about veg oil!0 -

Duty on veg oil is 27.1p per litre - I think we are the only country in the EU which charges duty on veg oil. You just get a form from HM C&E and fill it in and pay up. You should make sure you declare all the veg oil you use... minus the amount you use to fry your chips.
Plenty of good info on the site I mentioned above.
As for the lpg conversions, modern engine use about 10-15% more lpg to do the same mileage. Should work out about half price of running on petrol at current prices, tot the saving up over a year. Older conversions can use 25% more lpg than petrol.0
