I done all of my DD switching myself and had no problems.

The receiving bank does not need sorting codes or any such like for Direct Debits - All they need is the six digit ID number, and the name.

They then write to each one advising that the bank details have changed.

    Hi,
I'm new here and would welcome any advice that can be given. I am switching to Alliance & Leicester from Nationwide but it has run into problems.

    Hi Andy,

Thanks very much for the information. The D/D list given to me by Nationwide today didn't have the six digit ID numbers but I've now went online and can see them listed. I'll be able to quote them, if need be.

    Cheers Genny

Result of my Phone Calls to A & L and Nationwide today.

Nationwide told me the information was sent to A & L on 2nd April, if they didn't receive it then they should request it again.

Alliance & Leicester will request the information again because they haven't received it.

A & L will then send me a copy so I will know the deed is done and I can then update the details if necessary. I'll be happy when that's done.

A big thanks to everyone for your help, you gave me lots of great advice.

    Much Appreciated Genny

Do not then assume that your DD's will be all be changed successfully.
The bank does not have the power to change them, only the payee (receiving organisation).

So keep a beady eye, well in time for them to come out. Council tax is the particularly troublesome one...........

A&L will contact the receiving organisations, but it's up to them to change the details NOT A&L.... SO's Yes, but DD's No...

So keep on top of it... or they will just bounce if you've closed the Nationwide one, or you will go overdrawn if they are honoured and the account isn't funded....

Hi and thanks for your tip, much appreciated

I'll definitely keep an eye on things. Not only debits but also monthly credits due to me as well. Don't want to miss out on incoming payments either.

There's no reason to close your Nationwide account until the new one is 100% working, unless you have no OD limit on the new account (and A&L will normally give you a free one).

So, keep both accounts open for a year, and keep enough money in the old one to cover your largest DD amount*. Then as each DD amount successfully goes through the A&L account, you can reduce your Nationwide balance to the next highest amount, and so on.

    * Or, more practically, enough to cover a whole month's DDs if you can afford to do so.

And monitor the Nationwide account every single day to catch any stray DDs.

    Hi markyMarkD

Thanks for your advice. I see where you're coming from and believe a lot of people prefer to keep both accounts open until everything is watertight.

My only reservation about that is Nationwide only pay a paltry 0.08% net if there is less than £500 going ito the account each month. I feel that would defeat the purpose of moving to a higher paying current account.

I'd rather move the whole balance to the higher paying account and take my chances that all will go well. Certainly hope so.

    Thanks again, much appreciated. Genny
