Diesel or Petrol??

hi what car do you drive? i have a diesel gold and am happy to only pay 120 a year now due to low emmisions but yours is even better. waht mpg do u get?
Mine is almost 70mpg on motorways, about 60mpg combined I think but you can look it up on the Renault website. My car is a Clio 1.5dci 86bhp - the 106bhp whilst fabulously powerful (and with 6 gears - great!) is not as economical, hence my choice. I have driven both the Megane 106bhp 1.5dci and the Clio. The Megane is my preference for power, and both fall in to the £35 per year tax band because of the co2 emissions. :T0 -

If you was travelling 60 miles in total a day to get to and from work. What engine size would you suggest would be best 1.4 Corsa Petrol or 1.7 Corsa Diesel??
Many Thanks for your replies.
Personally, if I didn't have a budget, i'd say - anything that was petrol driven V8. I'm sick of being told what I can and can't drive/tax/buy/afford/green.Genie

Well said, agree completely.
I had an Skoda Octavia 2.0TDi Elegance for 3 years my first ever diesel and have since picked up the Skoda Octavia 2.0 Petrol vRS, now I liked the Diesel, but I love the vRS it's so much more enjoyable to drive. Yes it costs more in Road Tax my insurance went up £30/Year to include business use and fuel costs slightly more out of my own pocket as Company/Taxman pays majority.
Do I miss the Diesel well the only thing I miss about the Diesel is the mileage range and not having to visit the Petrol Station as much as I do with the Petrol. I don't miss the startup smoke and smell though first thing in a morning.
Each to their own I suppose the Diesel was great with plenty of torque, but the petrol vRS is awesome.Cheers

I think the 17 extra MPG on diesel sounds a bit optimistic. Modern petrol cars are pretty efficient too. For example, I have recently driven an Astra 1.6 petrol and averaged 46mpg (mixed driving) .... the same Astra 1.7 diesel may get 53mpg??
as I said depending on the car its usually 10 - 25mpg so I was averaging 17, anything petrol in my experience thats regularly giving you 46mpg is pretty damn good but not the norm
the difference you quote of 7mpg is not typical I would say, and then you need to add in other factors, mix of driving, spec of car etc
between my friends and I the situation stacks like this
4yo astra 35mpg petrol
3 yo scenic 28mpg petrol
4 yo 307 55mpg diesel <----me
and thats us working out exactly what its costing us not manufacturers quoted figures etc - and again you add in how they're driven etc.............
so worst case scenario that you make then, would you not pay 45p extra for 7 miles more? multiply that up say 12 gallon tank, 84 miles more for £5.40?
isn't this a moneysaving forum lol...........mind you if that was the case we'd all be in Toyota Ago's or something lol :rotfl:0
