Diesel or Petrol??

Hi Everyone

If you was travelling 60 miles in total a day to get to and from work. What engine size would you suggest would be best 1.4 Corsa Petrol or 1.7 Corsa Diesel??

Many Thanks for your replies.

Don't forget to consider insurance - Bigger engine = bigger insurance. Also, diesels tax more, I think.

Personally, if you can counter in all of those things and still save money, I would buy the diesel - Unless you are travelling in rush hour. I have had both diesel and petrols and find that unless you're getting clear 50/60/70mph runs into work every day, you don't get that much more to the tank than a petrol, and you're still paying more to fuel up.

  • Hi

    Thanks for your reply.

My husband drives on the motorway to and from work. As we far as we know the tax for both of these are in the same bracket.

    Ok, wasn't sure!!

To be honest, I would say diesel then, if you can afford the extra straight out of your pocket - Trust me, if you can't, it really doesn't feel like you're saving money as you watch those numbers roll up, and up and up. :P

Yes you do get more due to the fact a diesel engine is always going to have at least a 15% advantage in thermal efficiency. And you're only paying 5% extra to fuel up. Then you've got to consider that when servicing the vehicle, a diesel has fewer parts that need changing partly due to not having spark plugs.

Diesel tax isn't necessarily more! My diesel car is £35 a year to tax because of the low emissions. It's the fastest car in the car's range and it the most economical, especially for motorway driving.

a 1.2 Fiesta petrol is £100 tax or so, the diesel 1.4 is £50 I believe.

You may be suprised, but these are obviously lower engine sizes all round.

Diesel every time if a turbo diesel TDI or TDCI etc.

I went over to diesel 5 years ago and am unlikely to go back. My first diesel was a Focus TDCI and I currently have a Golf 2.0 TDI and consistantly get 50mpg over varied driving and my home work journey is only 5 miles.

If you are buying new or nearly new the performance of the current crop of diesels is usually better as well. They are often more to buy new but you do get much of this outlay back when you come to sell.

The road tax is cheaper as well as the emissions are lower even on a 2.0 engine!

    hiya,

we have just changed to a diesel (dci 1.5 renault megane) from a ford focus 1.6 and are impressed already. our tax is only £35 a yr, its costs about £50 to fill up but does around 62 MPG depending on what roads we're on ie town/motorways. the trip computer reckons its does on average 750 miles to a tank but with the focus we were only getting around 350-400 so we are very happy.

my oh does 50 mile a day round trips to work, we were getting through £40 min a week with the petrol, we do about 15000 miles in total a yr so its saving us a fortune already, even with diesel costing a few pennies more alitre, we have only had to fill up twice so far too. we are certainly diesel converts
