My problem is the loo, I have tried EVERY major cleaner out there without success, left them overnight and got down with a rubber glove and a brillo pad but there's still staining under the waterline at the very bottom of the loo which you can see.

I'm guessing some OS stuff will prob succeed where all the Jif, harpic mr muscle etc has failed, but I'm not sure what, bicarb? carbolic acid? soda crystals? Combination? (i'm scared of the bog exploding  )

Also the toilet is wall hung so the bottom is v dificult to get to so if it's something that 'sinks' to the bottom all the better - I can't reach every thing I can see, if that makes sense

sounds more like limescale than just plain everyday dirt. I bought the Harpic Limescale treatment tablets but I'm sure that there's something OS that would work just as good and not as toxic.

def agree with the cheap cola - works a treat
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx
  • I use caustic soda, you can get it in hardware shops.
It's crystals that react with the water, very toxic fumes though so be careful. Chuck it in, close the lid, and the door and leave it to work its magic!

I've also used it before to unblock the drains (back in the days when I thought charmin ultra was a good idea!). Saved £90 drain clearance costs!.

on the subject of Charmin, i hate it, it seems to block the drain regardless of it being 1 sheet or 12???

Thank you thank you THANK YOU for all the advice.

We live in a very hard water area and our toilet had gradually gone from white to dark brown. I'd tried everything to get it clean but nothing worked - which left me with a collection of expensive chemical cleaners.

I knew I had to get the water out of the bowl but wasn't sure how to go about it :o Thanks to your advice, I managed to do it.

So I emptied the bowl, then sprayed cillit bang on it, scrubbed with a scourer, flushed, repeat, empty again and now I've left it overnight with the remainder of the Harpic cleaner.

I managed to scrub out LOADS of limescale, but the very bottom is still a very dark brown, which is now more obvious because the rest is clean. So wish me luck! :D

Please be extremely careful if you try caustic soda- it's very nasty stuff indeed. I would try something (anything) else first.
Also DO NOT combine it with anything else.

I personally wouldn't recommend cola- it just stained the limescale brown on the loo I tried it on. The stuff that is supposed to make cola work is citric acid, which you can sometimes buy from a chemist or asian shop. It apparently has other uses now, which means it's harder to buy than it used to be, but it works fantastically. Better than vinegar even, and it sinks to the bottom.
Otherwise it may be a case of repeatedly soaking in cheap vinegar (though not so cheap that it's 'non-brewed condiment'- that won't work). You could try draining most of the water out, put down some bicarbinate of soda, add vinegar (watch the fizz!) and leave for as long as possible. Repeat if necessary.
I've seen people recommend pumice stomes on TV, and they're not supposed to scratch if you keep them wet, but not brave enough to try myself...

    Good Luck!

Budget cola: useful for both cleaning loos and shifting burnt on food from saucepans. However, it does make you wonder what it does to your "innards" though!

If it is limescale, ladle as much water as you can out of the loo. Then put kitchen paper soaked in white (aka distilled malt) vinegar, the natural enemy of limescale, directly onto the deposit.
