It is definately a matter of taste. I've noticed (I work in retail so I see a lot of cards every day) that First Direct (and I assume HSBC) cards are available in a very plain black design which I quite like, but then where most things are concerned I like basic 'natural' looks rather than something with a lot of junky/fancy design work done on it.

HSBC's looks refined and business-like (or a cross between Amex red and Capital One Classic). It's prettyful, but then I have odd tastes :D

Go for an Amex Green if you can get it, it's a charge card (so you HAVE to pay the balance back) and it's all see through and pretty.

I have both of these cards. The HSBC looks pretty nice, I like the colours (black/red).

I also have the opaque AMEX Green Card. Unfortunately they no longer offer this see-through like Green card. Only cardholders who applied for the card before 2008 will be issued the opaque Green Card. The new Green look similar to the original Green. Like this:

    *top card only

    New Green (post 2008)

The difference between old and new Green is that the old one's annual fee is only 37.50 pounds a year whereas the new one costs about 60 pounds a year (inclusive of compulsory membership rewards scheme fee).

I have one of those "see-through" Amex cards with the blue middle:cool: - every time I use it the other person comments on it - didn't think they were that unusual:confused: Anyway, it's a bit of a pain - very easy to misplace, especially amongst other cards! Other than that, I think the plain black ones look good........

It doesn't matter how much in debt you are getting, just how good you look doing it! ;)
    Best Regards,

To be fair, the OP said it would get paid off every month, so they are not intending to get into debt with it, but I can't understand why it matters what the card looks like?!

Ah well, whatever floats their boat! :D
