AOL nightmare

Hello all,
I am so furious about AOL. My pc broke down in March 07 (hadn't had one until Jan 08 and still not using internet), but I was still paying for AOL broadband until Sept 07 when the 12-month contract was offically up. I'd tried to contact AOL via the phone with no success (didn't know about their new number) or via sending an email to them, but my account has been blocked since I cancelled DD in Oct 07 as I didn't want to pay for AOL anymore and had no other option how to contact them. Just before X'mas last year I had received a letter from AOL demanding the money for those months (Oct - Dec), but did nothing as I was leaving for holiday. In Jan 08 I finally started having a conversation with AOL via email (through a different email account), giving them all the details, but they couldn't find my account and told me to call them.  How ODD! Eventually I called them on their new ph number and cancelled the account. Later I received another letter -DEMAND- to pay outstanding balance of £77 and if not they'll take a legal action against me. Just got back from my hols and found another TWO letters one saying about the payment the other about how much I would have to pay in case of court proceedings. How serious are they?
I have to mention that I cancelled my anti-virus programme Jan 07 and they still charged me until DD cancellation in Oct 07. Could I demand that money back and what should I do with this situation? Should I pay the outstanding balance and forget about the anti-virus and the whole mess?
Many thanks for your ideas.

the antivirus overcharge you should be able to get back, as you had cancelled. The broadband, on the other hand wasn't cancelled in line with the terms and conditions, so i guess you're liable, they provided a service regardless of whether you chose to use it or notUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0
