Halifax student account

Has anyone experienced difficulty opening a student account with the halifax.
My son who has just turned 18 is going off to university next month and is keen to open a student account. Given that the Halifax is considered one of the most favourable, my son tried to open an account with the halifax but was refused because his credit scoring was below the approval level. We were taken aback by this decision given that he has does not have a credit history as he has never been in debt. I imagined that many other students would be in a similar situation. Our reaction is one of dissappointment and can't help but feel that my son is being treated like someone who is a bad debtor. We feel like giving the halifax a wide berth yet are angry that they can get away with this. Is there anything that one can do to redress this unfairness?

I had the same problem with Abbey National last year, didn't know whether to laugh or cry. They said my credit rating was low because i didn't have any credit history, therefore I couldn't have a student account  . How any of these banks can expect a student of 18 to have a good credit history is beyond me.
So now it's their loss, will probably never ever bank with them again because of how i felt at the time. Plenty of the other banks were keen to offer me accounts, in fact some were willing to bite my hands off! Coincidentally I opened one with HSBC but have found their service to be absolutely shocking, so i'll be looking to swap to Halifax when I get back to uni.

They reffered me. About three weeks ago, never got back to me. Why should i bother. I would go with Natwest. Then open another one at freshers week.0

NatWest are great - they come highly recommended from me one year on. And not just because of the cheap rail fares (Hint: free 5-year railcard).
I applied in branch and had everything within a week. If you don't need everything that quickly you can apply online at https://www.natwest com; my girlfriend did this and I think the process took about 2 weeks to get everything sorted.

I went into Halifax the other day, according to the manager you only get £500 overdraft and you must put your student loan into that account before you can apply to have it extended. I think it's abit ambigous, but I'll se what happens0
