Ooh thanks Zippychick.
The rolls are lovely and the apple braids are in need of their own armed guard :-)

You all mke me feel awful I bought a breadmaker about two years ago and it's still sitting in it's box. To this day I havn't a clue as to what made me buy it and as I live alone I really can't see me using it .I think I may offer it on freecycle as it's just wasting away up on top of my cupboard .:o

pop it on ebay!
Yeah at least try and get back something near to what you paid for it.
If you live alone jacki981, then making bread by hand is ideal. Give it a go, I became hooked on breadmaking (as I've said before thanks to zippychick).
P.S Whats apple braid????Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!0 -

Thanks for that zippychick, I am just making some bread, (by the way OH said the last loaf I made was the best yet- he wont eat shop bought now!):T
Will give the apple braid a go. looks delicious. I'm guessing that when its rolled out it has already proved once?
I was just thinking about giving other things a go using my dough mixture.Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!0 -
I'm sure you do this already, so please don't think I'm being patronising.
A good tip is to cut the bread before freezing, so you only have to take out what you need to eat. One problem with freezing the bread is that when defrosted it goes stale quicker than fresh bread, or so I've heard. (Apparently it's something to do with starch crystalising faster.) Therefore, once you've defrosted the whole lof you have to eat it *really* fast!
Salt is a good, hefty pinch of sea salt. It probably works out at about a teaspoon. I then grind it up with a piece of cinnamon stick that I've crumbled and toasted. I go by taste more than anything and it tastes about right to me. All the rest is by feel and the loaves keep on getting better and better.
I never used to touch making bread, now I make a loaf every 3 days. And that's down to Count Rostov's wonderfully, inspiring OP.0 -
I've made the apple braid sucessfully:T and I want to try something else.
I have an 8year old chocoholic stepson. Please can anyone tell me if this would work OK.
Instead of using apple etc could i spread with chocolate spread and roll in some choc chips? Would the spread be ok?Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!0 -

Just signed up to MSE today, after reading the forums for several weeks. I've not read all the way through this thread, so I apologise if this question has been addressed - I've made bread by hand in the past, both from scratch and from a ready-made mix, but every time the result has been a very heavy loaf with huge air-holes. Could any one please tell me where I've been going wrong?0
