It takes time certainly but it isn't time consuming. Each stage of the process requires very little effort;)
I've enjoyed following your adventures with sour dough, it's like waiting for a new baby to arrive! :D

I look forward to reading about the results once it's baked.

I've borrowed it from the library;) Yes, as far as I remember it is pretty good.

Must be fairly popular - 3 copies in our city libraries and all out or on reserve shelf. Have put my reserve request in online - as well as some other bread books too ;) Thanks :D

  • Just to let you know, I received my new breadmaker today. Its a Swan which I'm a bit nervous of using (although my first loaf is in!), I used to have a Panasonic and loved it.... Oh well, must get my eyes tested soon! Anyway it was a bargain, I used a code for Kays Catalogue and it cost me £38 which I thought was super... I hope I have my instructions on baking for my Panasonic somewhere as the Swan one isnt very good....

My OH has managed to kill my breadmaker (long story) which I am gutted about as it doesn't look as if we will be able to buy another one anytime soon. Might put in a christmas request as I did really love it. Not sure about making bread by hand, it seemed to take a whole load of time and energy and I never managed to have good results.

Hi, have you thought of looking on your local Freecycle for a breadmaker as that is where mine came from. There are lots of instruction books available online if you need them and recipes too. Just a thought.

I am still searching for the holy grail re pot bread and I got itchy feet last night so woke my starter up, sloshed in some flour, water and bits of salt and some sugar (for a crispy crust). Covered the bowl with a shower cap and left it alone until this morning. Added some flour and cut it about with a scraper. Plopped it into a madium remoska and left it for 2-3 hours. Cooked it 40 mins, turned it and gave it another 10.

Tonight we ate half of it and it was totally gorgeous. The crumb was definitely more open so the remoska way is part way there. Next time I will try the tray and pyrex bowl but I think that such a soft mix will spread out below the bowl, anyway I`ll see

I nearly forgot to save any starter but remembered only when there were just scrapings left in the lock n lock that I keep it in when in the fridge. Oh well tender loving nursing was needed so I added a little flour and a little lukewarm water and popped it back in the fridge. This morning I administered 000 flour and cold water and this evening there are bubbles so phew it still lives. I do have a 6 month old starter in the fridge but this latest version was getting lovely and lively. Such a pity that the oven lets the bread down ie fan, wish I could switch it off

We have loads of threads about breadmakers on this board. This thread is about baking bread by hand -stirring ingredients in a bowl, kneading with your hands and baking it in the oven:)

My first sour dough loaf has been pronounced good by OH:j

It looks great, nice crisp but chewy crust and open texture. It has a distinctly sour taste. I've never actually tried sour dough before so didn't know what to expect but I like it. OH says it makes great toast.

I shall definitely be making it part of my breadmaking routine and will try to bake one every other day.

    I'm glad it went well!

I've read through this thread over the past couple of days and have decided to try home made bread again. Hubby generally isn't a big fan, he likes the shop bought soft (rubbish) stuff but I've made some rolls with your recipe and they've come out soft and lovely, hopefully he'll be converted!! I've always loved hand baked bread so am delighted to be having another go!
