    Hi Again.
I have 2 dogs and would fight to the bitter end for them too. They do save you!
Have to ask but why the heck did she want to know where you took the horse to in the trailer?.
Sounds like life has delt you a hard blow(more ways than one from reading between the lines),having to contend with everything must be taking it's toll.

    Hi G2C

I think you should stick to your guns...you know that even if listed as an asset if this below £1k then the OR is not interested anyway. If it had been about a TV worth £500 then I bet the OR would have never mentioned it again!!

The valuation on your dear horse will be negligible anyway so I think your OR is just being petty..its not as though he`s draining your income or anything .

Thanks for posting as you are right that it raises other issues around BR.

Thanks again for replies - I get a lump in my throat when I read such supportive words; I only wish that I could be supportive right back instead of the quivering self-absorbed wreck that I know I am guilty of being.

So - have just been to see my "asset" (like he could care less) and am now covered in white horse hairs and have mud down my nails. There is a part of me that says "Do it, call the vet and arrange things" - but apart from not having £290, there doesn't seem a real real reason - he seems fine. Really. He may be absolutely priceless to me but he has no value whatsoever in real terms - even a knackers yard would charge me for the privelige (sp) of ending his life. The only way that it wouldn't cost as much is for the Hunstman from not even local kennels to come and do it and then take him for the hounds to eat. I was OK with that - it's somehow traditional; he was a hunter in his youth but I have never hunted, it's not really my thing. But then I watched that Countryside programme - The Lie of the Land - and NO WAY was my best friend ending up like that. And anyway, it was one thing to talk about and I feel sure that without any kind of preview, I wouldn't have done it in the end.

I guess the OR thought that if I could be off hunting and to shows then I was frittering my money away on extravagant pastimes and I would have had my knuckles royally rapped again. *sigh* The thing is - when I got my property settlement, I didn't envisage being made redundant from the global (American-based) food manufacturer that I worked for, I only owed £7,000 which included loads of interest and charges and I never thought to ask for !!!!!! figure - wouldn't anyone just carry on paying the payment that was agreed? I remember the day that I said, it's a big chunk of £25,000, I could be dead next year, I'll carry on the way I have...........
.....oh boy, that has come back to bite me on the a**e

G2C, i've just read your story about your best friend. My goodness, how callous it all is.

I'm sure there are people who have dogs as pets that have a monetary value higher than your horse, but the OR would not expect them to give them up as an asset. I can't see how your horse is any different, I really can't.

I really hope she backs down and leaves you to enjoy the last of the time you have together.

Mmm Odd for the OR to be so nice about one thing and go a bit funny on another. Perhaps she was having a bad day or another bad client perhaps?

Personally, I would be inclined to take her advice (sort of...) and call her in a few days - that you have followed her suggestions and the horse has been donated to an old friend who has taken him away. Its not like she is ever going to know. If she wanted proof, get your friend who's field he is currently in to write on letterheaded paper about it.

As you best pal doesn't cost you much, the little it does cost you I assume you can afford out of your surplus? But I have to be frank - if you cannot afford the £290 now (which I do not believe you should anyway) then what are you going to do in the future when the poor boy may get sick? Can you afford to make allowances for vet bills in your surplus?

I have a Westie and there is no way on earth I would permit any OR to suggest I get rid of him or similar. And I didn't put him down as an asset because he is not an asset - he is family (except when he digs holes and empties the bin. Then hes a bu88er)

I think that actually the OR was quite cheesed at me for having frittered away my divorce/property settlement and used the horse as a focus for everything I have done wrong. But I didn't plan to get made redundant - twice - get bullied and then "fired" and have my income drop by two thirds to end up on Jobseekers Allowance. She wanted to see it that by spending the money, I made it more likely that I would go BR.
I had thought twice about including "details" of my divorce and settlement in the BR petition but didn't want to omit something or commit perjury so was totally honest - to my cost I would say.
I have been thinking about it and am quite p****d off that she asked me to explain almost every transaction on the two years' statements that she received. For example - the closest shop to where I worked was Jacksons (now Sainsburys); I used to smoke so would call in there most days; she asked me about that. Ditto, my local shop. Thorough isn't the word for it. I booked a flight for with Thomsonfly for a friend that I used to work with; he paid me back in cash; the cost was about £270 but she asked me where I went on holiday last January - inference being "What were you doing going on holiday when you were about to be made redundant?" After redundancy, I bought my - THE - car for £2000. She questioned why I had made 2 x £1000 withdrawls in quick succession......... (only allowed £1000/time at my Halifax)
I'd say there is little wonder that she told me I shouldn't have a horse. (When it comes to his being put to sleep;my vet has a payment scheme and I am starting a payment to that in advance. His next illness will be the time so there won't be any more vet bills - certainly if needing a GA as no horse of his age would survive it....).

Silly cow, doesn't she realise that if crystal balls worked no-one ever would be BR. And she would be the one out of a job.

You weren't facing BR when you got your divorce settlement, so the money was yours to spend as you wished, I can't see how she could possibly have a problem with that. Sounds to me like she's hormonal!
