I have a basic Yamaha RX-V361 AV amp and NSP-110 speaker set which I got from Richer Sounds for just under £190 for both. I use a basic Daewoo DVD player, but you could substitute an LG RH188 DVDR/160GB HDD for a further £120. You'll also need an digital optical or coax cable for about £10-15.

Alternatively, as the best you'll get out of Freeview and analogue broadcast TV is Prologic, you could just get a basic DVD player (for about £20-40) and use that for playing bought/rented DVDs and continue to use your existing Wharfedale for recordings. This also has the advantage that you can record a DVD whilst you're watching another, but your setup will be a bit more complicated.

Of course, with home cinema, the sky's the limit in terms of what you can spend...
  • if you want real surround sound cinema effect.. then youll need the right kit, which includes a AV receiver + speakers + dvd, if you spend less on a all-in-one kit for example ie dvd player with built in amp that includes speakers+sub etc.. the quality just isnt there.. (my brother has one, he didnt listen)

here is couple of products to show you an example of what youll need.. but depending on buget, as cowbutt said.. the sky is the limit and youll only get what you pay for..

    av receiver.. http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=YAMA-RXV361
    speaker package.. http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=YAMA-NSP110
    dvdR +160gb HD.. http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=LG-RH188

total=£319.85 (ebay your Wharfedale? or 2nd room it)
btw richersounds oftern do good deals if you haggle with them, may get free optical lead or something.. managed to get some £80 component leads for half price..
I dont owe nothing, I own everything I have... dont do buy now pay later, dont do credit cards, dont do loans...

Having had a couple of all-in-one DVD/AV amp systems which died prematurely, I've completely sworn off them. They look like good value, and the better ones even sound OK, but I just don't think very much care has gone into the design or assembly.

On the topic of budget, though, remember the law of diminishing returns very much applies.

Regarding Richer Sounds, also remember that a) they price match, even websites and b) their extended warranty ("SuperCare") is actually one of the few worth buying - it's pretty cheap, and you even get your money back at the end of the term if you haven't claimed!

If you can't get your digital lead for free from Richer when you buy a system, Maplin are probably a cheaper place to buy. Note that I don't believe in cable magic, as long as the cables and their connectors aren't damaged or faulty.
  • Without a budget or knowing exactly what you have to connect, we're just going to be guessing. Do you have a High Def TV, do you intend buying a bluray player in the future?

If you're on a budget there are a few systems to check out. Pixmania stock some of them under amp/speaker packages:

    Yamaha AV61
    Denon 1356XP
Sony HT-SF1100 (or newer 1200/2000 systems)
    Sony HT-DDW890

All are around £200-300. I'm not a fan of all-in-one home cinema systems but Sony's sound a lot better than the likes of Panasonic, Samsung and LG IMHO. There will be bluray all-in-ones released later this year.

If you're looking for a HDD/DVD-R I would start with Panasonic and Sony and maybe Pioneer. The Panasonics seem to be pretty user friendly.

If you can raise your budget a little look at separate AV receiver (amp with a radio basically!) and speakers such as the Yamaha 761 (£200-230) from richer sounds and Jamo A102 HCS5 speakers (£200).
