Bank Error - Compensation Sought

I ordered a new cheque-book and then telephoned because this had not arrived. It then arrived but, unknown to me, when I’d rung the bank stopped the cheque-book and issued a new one.>

I then found out by chance (the bank hadn’t contacted me) that 4 cheques I’d issued had been stopped by the bank. I live in a local community and for these cheques to not have been honoured when presented (and when I had sufficient funds in my account) caused me concern and embarrassment. The morning after I discovered the problem I had to go out of my way, calling on local businesses to explain the problem and letting them have the payment again.

The bank at least admitted the error was theirs and they hadn’t told me that the cheque-book was being stopped. I asked or compensation based on the £35 per cheque they previously charged me in the past for a cheque being presented which took me over limit, plus some compensation for having to travel around to all the businesses and something for the concern/embarrassment and injury to feelings.

The bank has offered £50 which doesn’t seem very much. Anyone had a similar situation and what arguments did you put to get the bank to pay up something reasonable?

Thanks in anticipation of any help.

  • The cheques would not have been returned "refer to drawer", probably "payment stopped" or something similar. So the people who received the stopped cheques have not been told you have insufficient funds in your account (which I know you haven't).

Technically the Bank have done nothing wrong as you reported the book missing, it is reasonable to assume they blocked the book. £50 seems very generous. I would be happy if you were offered that. Although I am sure others will disagree.

Agreed. I'd take the £50 and keep quiet.
Bet match total as of 04/10 = God Knows + About £1000 Quidco. Time for Mrs Huddsta to have a crack!!!

    Thanks for the replies folks.

Just to clarify a couple of things though. I didn't report the book as missing, I was just chasing it up and it then arrived. The bank had, in the meantime, put a stop on it without telling me.

Well, would you be content if the bank asked you for compensation when you made a mistake?
  • have you actually suffered any financial loss? if not, then do not request any compensation.

I wonder how long you waited for the cheque book before you chased it?

It certainly would have helped if the bank had told you that they were going to cancel the cheque book, before re-issuing it.

Take everything you can get. For years banks have levied charges which are way over the true cost to them, so why should you not ask even though you are not out of pocket? The only difference is that you are polite enough to ask for it first.

If they'd charged bounced cheque fees of a fiver over the years then I'd have some sympathy for robertjonesuk's point.

You are the shareholder of Morse Ltd., get whatever you can for yourself without breaking the law or losing friends.

Well I would have to disagree there pal, I think that if you have been unfairly charged by a bank or finance company then yes seek recovery of those funds, but for the sake of scamming them so you can have a few extra quid in your pocket is not the right thing to do, If my business was getting shafted off my customers I would make sure I passed on the compliments to them, and kick their asses soooooo hard, come on now what is wrong with people in this country, getting too like America for me, if you miss manage your accounts and incur a penalty charge then tough s**t, at the end of the day it is just simple math and life management isn’t it? If people stopped suing everybody for the sake of it and just took responsibility for themselves I think it would be a better world all over, yes ok get what you can in life but don’t hurt somebody else financially or physically to do this, freaking capitalism and bureaucrats, get stuffed!

Yep, plus one cheque that wasn't honoured was a credit card payment, taking me over limit with charges and they've bad credit marked me now!
