Yes - we have a "car phone" (in the car, believe it or not :)) on the Tesco Value tariff which we always switch on when we leave the house so the kids can contact us if their train is late etc.. We also have 2 other mobiles using the Tesco Standard Tariff. It's definitely useful to have a phone that can be used abroad. Also, I wanted my daughter to be able to access some of the extra features - send pictures etc.- on her own phone which you can't do on the Value Tariff.

We do use the "3 favourite numbers option" on the Standard Tariff phones as well.

However, I've been researching the VYKE option today to get really low cost texts but it seems there are quite a few glitches with it. Does anyone know of other options to get cheap texts, other than buying text bundles from Tesco?

  • the cheapest at the moment seems to be orange, 15p per min flat rate anywhere (landline and x network) 10p txt. Also they are doing a intro offer of 1000 free texts.

The cheapest payg text tariff without the need to top up is T-Mob Text Appeal 3p a text.

On Tesco if you switch to the standard plus tariff, £15 monthly top up required, you get 500 free texts, plus you get to use the £15.So by adding a £10 200 text bundle, you get 700 texts a month for £10. Which brings cost down to less then 1.5p a text.

Also from your pc you could use this 1p a text service.

Hi - thanks for your input! I personally only use about £10 every 2/3 months on my own Standard Tariff phone so switching to Standard Plus Tariff is not a good option for me right now. Daughter's the same but I can see her use creeping up. The T-mobile deal looks like a good one for her so I'll bear that in mind.

Texting from the PC is not a good option for us at the mo but, again, something to keep in mind for the future?

    Thanks again - Karen
