The OP hasn't said how long he has been living there, and how many other rent increases he has had in that time?
I'm of a similar nature to Pickles. If they are good tenants, then I tend to leave the rent as it is. We both get the benefit in the long run

Surely with house prices going down, rents will go down too? Tell him it's too expensive and that you will leave, it's his problem that his mortgage is going up, not yours!

I agree his problem he can't just expect you to foot the bill. Have a look round and see what's about price wise and wether it is going to suit you and then you are armed in case he comes back with a no!
Good lord some may think FTB are mad for buying but that's far more than our mortgage!
I wish you luck let us know what he says.

A landlord can charge what he likes. If you don't want to pay that much then move. There will be many more putting up prices as mortgage rates increase so you may find moving out it will be just as expensive to rent elsewhere. If they then don't find a tenant then that is their look out and ultimately their business decision. If they fall on their face then too bad for them but don't expect them to necessarily be afraid of taking that risk just because you wouldn't.

    Absolutely.

If you don't like it, vote with your feet.

If he overprices, he won't get a tenant and may face void periods - his lookout.

No, rents go up in a crash. When prices fall, fewer people want to own (so fewer landlords) and more people want to rent (so more tenants).
Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!

Someone who posts a completely ridiculous comment in order to outrage people enough to throw the post off topic and start arguments.
Seems to me that it seems pretty fair price, why should you not help to pay increase in his mortgage, after all he is kind enough to let you stat there.

rents are much more related to wages than house prices
