Mobile Internet access, price per mb

Hi all,

I am going abroad in the near future and would like to access my emails, on my mobile (n95), whilst I am away.

The cost is quite expensive, £7.50 per mb, so I will set the phone to show text only, to keep help the data costs down.

However, I am at a loss as to how many text only e mails I will be able to view and send per mb.

Can anyone please advise?

Cheers

Leo

I'm not sure I know the answer, but it can be a very expensive mistake if you get it wrong!

There are 1024 kb per mb, the average page of text without images would be around 10-20kb.

Have a look at a program called "Profimail" for the n95, it allows you to access your email and only download the headers, it also has a kb counter as it downloads so you can see what you are downloading.

    Hi stompa

    Thanks for that link.....wow....bloody expensive!!

I am wondering though if the people in that link were actually using their phone as a modem to connect to the internet with a lappy.

I am not going to use a lappy...just the phone...so the web pages are (I think) a fair amount smaller, therefore cheaper. At least I hope they are.

Surely viewing emails can't use to many kb's..can it?

EDIT....Maybe I should mention that my email provider is gmail. I have not downloaded gmail to my phone as I just connect to my account using the mobile internet (T mobile, unlimited tariff whilst in UK)

Probably not. Presumably your phone has a data counter though, so you could take a reading, download some here in the UK, then take another reading to try and figure out how much has been downloaded.

I'd suggest using IMAP with GMail so that you only download headers by default.

Gmail makes it easy, download the gmail app from https://www.gmail.com/app (on your phone), it only uses about 5 kb per email, it won't cost much at all.
