Export the key first. Goto File and export, export the key.
Then delete it and try the install again. If this doesn't work goto start, run and type in c:\windows\installer and look for a directory that says messenger. Delete this too.0 -

My daughters friend is coming round tomorrow - he knows a bit about computers so I will show him what you put and get him to do it (Mind you last time he did something for me , we had to buy a new computer! - but the old one was knackered!)

Only a simple thing, but have you checked that your PC is showing the correct date.
My son had all the problems you're now having and when I checked, his PC was showing the year as 2002, once I changed it back, msn and system restore came back to life.Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before0
