Error messages!

Hi
I am hoping one of you kind souls can help me out here,

I tried to update MSN on my computer but some how have managed to delete it in the process! - Now it will not re install i keep getting the message "0x80000ffff catastrophic failure"

When i go to Install/Uninstall programs some part of MSN is still there but will not delete. I e mailed Microsoft help they said a patch must be still on and to download Windows Installer CleanUp Utility I have tried but after download it will not open - I get another error message "C:\Users\THEHUN~1|AppData|Local|Tmp|IXP001.TMP|StartMsi.vbs
Line: 17
Char: 1
Error: Permission denied
Code: 800A0046
Source: Microsoft VBScript runtime error"

I did try look up the error but the site i found http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/Logon/code/code_800A0046.htm

But I have no idea what it all means!

:confused:Any ideas????????

try another method, use system restore to go back to a date before you tried the update, then uninstall it before installing the latest version

  • sorry I should of said, I tried system restore and it still won't do anything - I even get an error message on system restore! (Basically it says it did not complete successfully and nothing was changed!)

  • when you download the patch, do you get a prompt that asks if you want to run the file or save the file to disk first?
  • No it doesn't, the patch is what needs removing apparently!
"Windows Installer CleanUp Utility" is supposed to be the download I need to do it but as I said before i get this error
    "C:\Users\THEHUN~1|AppData|Local|Tmp|IXP001.TMP|St artMsi.vbs
    Line: 17
    Char: 1
    Error: Permission denied
    Code: 800A0046
    Source: Microsoft VBScript runtime error"

the link microsoft sent was this;-
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

but when i said that would not work they said to contact vista - but by the look of it it costs £40 to even ask question by e mail!!!

Why don't you try taking ownership of the c:\users\thehun~1\appdata folder?
Browse to it via explorer then right click on the folder and select properties, goto the security tab then the advance tab then to the owner tab. Select your name from the list as the owner. Please note that the folder maybe hidden so you will have to tell explorer to display hidden files and folders.

There is a chance that the files that the system is looking for no longer exist if you have cleared out your temp files and cache.
  • :doh:Oh dear!
I had a tidy up recently and cleared out temp files - it looks like I'm doomed as far as msn goes- now just working out how to break the news to my teenage daughter!_pale_

Look in the registry for this key.
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\577EC8054AB4847428FDEF82ADF9300B

If you find it just check that it is the msn installer under the product name key. If it is delete it then try installing the app again.

If this isn't there goto the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products reg key and manually look through each one for the msn installer and when you find it delete it.

Let me know how you get on
  • :confused:Registry???? How do I find that?
Please be aware I am an absolute :doh:numpty when it come to jargon!

Goto Start, run and type in regedt32 and hit ok.
  • ok I have found something but not too sure if it is the correct one, it says windows installer on one part then next line windows live messenger.
I don't want to delete wrong one as I can still get e mails on windows live - is it ok to just delete?
