The other reason i decided not to wait for BM's snail mail application form was that i would not be able to tie up as much as i could put in the Coventry, which of course is not only instant access but i can add to in the course of the year.Working out the difference of the fixed rate,or any fixed rate account, plus the downside of an account that is dropping with the interest rate drop, balanced it out.

Also if rates do shoot up i can move it to another account anyway.Of course i do have the advantage of being over 50 here, knew there would be a plus point one day(balances out all the twinges that come with the wrong side of middle age) :D

6.45% got knocked off best buy tables so BM come storming back with 6.76%. http://www.moneyfacts.co.uk/savings/bestbuys/short-term-fixed-rate-bonds.aspx

Interesting, fsa.gov.uk/tables shows this deal as well, but its not on the BM website.

If you are over 50, SAGA (operated by BM) offers an even better deal at 6.92% AER. (Notional - actually 6.71% paid monthly to an external account).

Transfers from SAGA to Halifax take 3 working days.

Click Telephone Savings on the left, then Fixed Rate Bonds, then Direct 1 Year Fixed (Annual) or Direct 1 Year Fixed (Monthly).

Did you do a cheque for the full amount you want to put in there or are you planning to transfer more later?

I was a bit torn between having to leave money in a no-interest current account which I waited for BM to cash the cheque (which could take a week or two) and writing a smaller cheque planning to send more by BACS once the account's opened, but risking the account closing to new applicants before they send me my account number.

I sent a cheque for the full amount by recorded delivery. A bit horrible since I'll lose out between now & when they open it but just wanted to get it done in one hit.
