Vodafone ex Singlepoint default...HELP!

I have applied for a mortgage and have been turned down.

I requested my Equifax report and it shows that I have defaulted on a contract with Vodafone ex singlepoint in 2005.

It looks like I owe them £500.

The contract was on my ex partner's address and I haven't heard anything about it since way before 2005 when it was working well. We broke up badly so I can't contact my ex.

I'm hazy on what has happened but am very worried as my credit history is otherwise excellent and this is something that I have only just found out now. I've searched my report with Experian before and everything seemed tickety-boo. I would have sorted it out in 2005 if I had any inkling of any problems.

What do I do about getting my default off the report considering that a simple credit ref search would have revealed my current address and they could have contacted me at that address.

PLEASE help with a course of action! thank you.

I am currently trying to get a mortgage and am trying to figure out if I should pay the debt now or wait 3 years to get to the 6 year mark when it'll be wiped off my record. It seems bizarre that I haven't heard from Vodafone when a simple credit search would reveal my address!

You need to contact Vodafone to get this cleared up. They will have tried to contact you at that address, and then perhaps written it off as a bad debt, but quite rightly left it as 'owing' in their reporting to Experian.

And they can't just do a credit search on you without you wanting to apply for some service from them.

Quite frankly it sounds to me like you know this money is owed, but you're considering avoiding talking to Vodafone because they will more than likely ask for it!!! And in that case, of course, it will stay on your credit record - kind of defeats the purpose of it otherwise!

Well, if you're not desperate for that mortgage then of course. Though I expect you'll never be a welcome customer of Vodafone ever.

[and I'm trying not to judge on if you know you owe some money, but don't have to pay it, should you]

Hey you might save even more if house prices in your area are coming down anyway!

    Hi tomkhunt,

It's never good when you find that your credit file has been affected and you're not quite sure why. Perhaps we can get a fuller picture of this for you and tell you exactly where the debit is from and what the amount is for. At least then you'll be able to justify that it is correct or if you feel it's wrong you can tell us why so we can get it looked into to make sure it is correct or if not, have it removed.

To contact us here directly, go to our Vodafone online contact us form where you can e-mail us. In the body of your e-mail, put the code FIT135 and then your e-mail will be routed into us to take a look for you. Also remember to give us as much information that you have about the account or addresses etc that we may find it under. It would be great if you had a mobile or account number too for us to locate the account.

We'll look out for your e-mail and respond to explain what it is so you can at least settle your mind and understand completely why it's there and whether you think it's correct.

If you have never told Vodafone of your address change how do you think they would find you?
