Tefal - Glass lidded saucepans

Firstly, I've just found out from Tefal that none of the glass lids on their saucepans are covered by guarantee.

Last night as I was washing up the glass lid from my 15cm saucepan shattered as it went into the washing up bowl. The lid wasn't hot, and the water wasn't cold. It just shattered - into tiny tiny shards of glass. I'm only grateful that it was me that was washing up last night and not my 8yr old son who'd offered to do it.

Tefal can not guarantee that any of their lids on their saucepans won't do this and therefore do not cover them. Quite frankly I'm shocked. It was always my assumption that a product must serve the purpose it is intended for - clearly in Tefal's case this is not true. If the lid had crazed, but stayed intact I don't think I'd have been so shocked. The glass went everywhere.

Needless to say I will be writing to them to express my dissatisfaction and concern over their product and I will certainly never buy from Tefal ever again. I certainly would not recommend anyone to purchase Tefal glass lidded pans either. Mine were not terribly old - certainly under 14 months and I don't expect this to happen in general useage.

I can't remember the exact date - but I know I've not had them any longer than 14 months - as thats when I got my new cooker, and I didn't buy them straight away. Yes, I should have kept the receipt - but it wouldn't have helped in this anyway as Tefal told me they don't cover glass lids under any part of the guarantee as they 'can not guarantee' this won't happen!!!!

and thats my point exactly. I hate to think what would have happened if I had indeed had let my 8 year old wash up that night.

Scratching the old grey matter to something similar that happened in the 80's with a set of glass pots that we had (remember them?). There was something funny over the guarantee (vague memories of something on That's Life' or whatever consumer program was about then). If I remember right there were 2 problems mentioned: firstly people washing them while they were still too hot (I think the advice was something like if they are too hot to hold then they were too hot to wash) and secondly problems with general knocks in cupboards etc. (caused 'invisible' fractures which could develop and ultimately shatter). it appeared you had to treat them like your finest porcelain.

However one would have thought that technology might have advanced beyond that point over the last 20+ years .. maybe not.

We've had Prestige glass lidded pans for the past 10 years. Don't know if they still make them but ours are still fine.
Don't grow up. Its a trap!

There are 2 different issues here, for me.Firstly,I am not particularly surprised the glass lids are not covered by the guarantee,(although i would have assumed they were too),because a guarantee is an added bonus,if you like, and the can include or exclude what they like.I am interested in your post because you wouldn't expect this too happen,if you were treating the pans carefully.
I would be getting in writing from the company, exactly how you should care for the pans,to avoid this happening,(otherwise you might be inclined towards the opinion that they are not fit for purpose,or have a design fault .)
Out of interest, are the lids all glass,or do they have a metal lip?Are they described as tempered glass,and/or should that matter?

Just had a look on their web site about 'care and cleaning' etc.

It says that lids, handles and saucepans are covered under the guarantee, however glass lids are prone to shattering if washed before they have cooled, and therefore they do not cover this.
(I will try and do the links if anyone is interested).

Its going to be very difficult for you to prove that the lid was not hot when it was washed, and as you have not got the receipt either, even less likely to be sucessful.

It must feel very fustrating, and without wanting to sound flippant at all, count yourself lucky that you have an 8 year old who offers to wash up for you, I would love one of mine to do the dishes!

Have you had any response from HO?
