Broadband - Shared House
Options

Hi
I'm moving house next Monday and was wondering if you would be able to help me out with broadband options.
There will be 5 of us living at the new house, everyone uses the internet on occasion but I will require a dedicated line for myself and was wondering what the best way to go about this is. I would rather not have to shell out for a BT line as we will only be at the address for 6 months. Can you get 2 separate cable lines in?

You probaly could but you would still have to sign a 12 month contract for both of them.
Is their an existing BT line at new address ,if so these people will take it over for you and offer you a 3 month contract, with one months notice.

I'm not sure yet if there was a bt line, obviously want to get it done asap but I don't get the keys till Monday so i'm looking into it now. I imagine I will have to get it reconnected even if there is one still there?
If I had to sign for a 12 month minimum maybe that I could change address after 6 months and move the service? Probably for a fee...
Which works out cheapest hehe0 -
Do you have Virgin Cable in your area? Look at getting their 20mb service, because between 5 any less than that speed will be slow0

That's my point really
I need a dedicated line myself so we would have to have 2 lines, one for me and one for the other 4 to share
Yes it is a cable area0 -
Just out of curiosity why would you need a dedicated line yourself?0

Into online gaming and i've used a shared connection before and it sucked, am very willing to pay the extra so I don't lag while people are streaming stuff etc. Also I will be working remotely on occasion but mainly for gaming0

If that is the only reason you need a dedicated line, go for a good router, and configure QoS. There are loads of documentation on the net, if you want to look it up. The time spent understanding QoS is worth it, IMHO! You can virtually guarantee dedicated bandwidth for yourself, from what you can get on the internet. If you are doing so, I might pay a bit more and upgrade the bandwidth, so as not to inconvenience others sharing the line. The advantage is you can leave the place anytime, ask them to downgrade back to original bandwidth, without any penalty. You take your router and all configs when you move.Look after your pennies, and your pounds will look after themselves!0 -

This is by far the best solution.
BTW - for ISP look if BE Broadband is available in your area, 24MB for £22 a month.0 -
