Tesco

Last week i brought a top from my local tesco for a relative as a present, i cut the plastic thing off to remove the price tag but it also remove the Florence & Fred tag. Unfortunatly the top did not fit so i took the top back today for a refund only to be told by customer services that as the tags had been removed (and i did not have them) i was not entitled to a refund or credit. I went home and phone Tesco head office only to be told that because i had removed the tags it was company policy not to refund, exchange or credit. I was told that there is a notice on the customer services desk stating that if tags are removed then no refund. I advised them that i pay for my items at a till not cust services desk and that if it was Tesco policy the the cashiers should advise customers not to remove the tags until they are sure they are keeping the garments. I was still not happy with this explaination so i asked to speak to a manager, i explained what had happend the managertook my phone number and called me back 10 mins lateronly to be told that on this occasion they would refund my purchase and that a note was going to go roung all Tesco store to advise that all cashiers should tell customers not to remove tag from clothes until they are sure they are keeping them.
I did get a result in the end but i could have given up when the store told me that it was against company policy the first time.
My advise is do not accept the first NO that these companies try and fob us off and they do get away with it most of the time.
I feel much better now i have got that off my chest. If anyone does read this Thank You
Sue

I don't think Tesco were being unreasonable. The goods were not faulty so they were under no obligation to refund or exchange them even if they did have tags on.

I think most shoppers know it's foolish to remove tags if you are not sure you want to keep the item as large stores will usually exchange if you change your mind if the goods have the original packing/tags.

If they accepted goods which have had tags removed it raises suspicion that they have been worn. We have all heard people say they buy a suit from a major high street store for an interview - wear it and then return it for a refund. I personally don't want to buy second hand goods at new prices. In one shop I was about to try on a dress when I noticed lipstick on it. Ok I thought it could have come from someone trying it on. Then I noticed the tell tale white deodrant marks and a sweat ring. When I pointed it out to an assistant they just shrugged. I later heard that 2 members of staff were sacked from the store for 'borrowing clothes'.

It's very rare that i've bought any clothes from Tesco, however i have purchased many many things from Asda, I have never had any problem with them although i must admit if there is a problem i only usually want to swap it, but i've always been offered a refund no questions asked. I think after reading your post i'm not likely to be purchasing anything from Tesco in a hurry :(

I have bought clothes from Tesco and provided you have receipt and they are in Original condition they have just refunded.

Also I returned a load of cake mixes and flour which had been infected by Flour mites. Refund from Tesco and vouchers from Flour company. However the person before me was returning a plant and they were funny about that.

  • I've also bought clothes from both Tesco and Asda, Asda return policy used to be much better, they would giver you 100 days to return clothes. Now it is reduced to 28 days since Walmart took over. However l have never had a problem returning any item of clothing l have purchased from them.

I know other people who have had problems returning items to tesco without tags as well and they gave up and kept the item. I certainly wouldn't accept that.

I'm amazed you think Tesco were unreasonable in their attitude. If their policy was to change/refund everything without tags they would soon be getting items back that had been worn.

They will refund/exchange on clothes without the tags, provided you keep the tags. I had bought a present for a relative but it did not fit. I gave my sister-in-law the tags but not the receipt. She explained it had been a gift and they refunded the money in gift vouchers as they did not have any of the same item in the next size up.
  • I would accept this policy if it was the same everywhere. But as their big competitors are much more laid back regarding this it gives Tesco a bad vibe and makes you want to shop elsewhere.

Another difference in policy is Tesco will refund any own brand product you dislike, fine.

Asda will give you 200% refund on any own brand product you don't like.

Needless to say l buy a lot more own brand products in Asda, and l love trying out all the different ranges and new items they bring in, l know l'll get a double refund if l don't like them.

For a business to refuse items without tags is fine as a refund policy, but as a customer service policy it's not great, especially if your competitors show you up.
    Sense is not common.

Can't believe people try and take things back after taking the tags off.. if they accepted it we'd never need to buy clothes again. Buy something, wear it, take it back, get a refund buy something, etc etc

Best is when they shorten trousers and take them back. Seen this loads in M&S Soiled and damage rails.

I used to know someone years ago that was a real devil for doing this, bought something one week on her store card so she never actually paid for it and then returned it the following week or after a couple of days after wearing it. and if she got it dirty, shed wash it then put a pull or a rip in it to say it was damaged when bought but had not noticed until she came to launder it before wearing. she was a real crafty sod, had tons of store cards so she could spread it around abit, put me off shopping in store and would only buy from catalogues after that for ages. and drive everyone mad scanning and sniffing it before id keep it . :o :-X
