That is very cheap for the spec even if you miss Quidcos 3%

Is the spec better than the Fujitsu one? The cashback is for 'end users' - what does that mean?
Is a Athlon processor better than Intel?

Excellent - many, many thanks for all the help today.

2 years isn't old at all, run a virus scan, uninstall accumulated rubbish in control panel,add/remove programs, have a cleanup, and if necessary reinstall windows.

If it doesn't shut down, hold down the on/off button for 6 secs. Deleting hiberfil.sys, and turning off power saving might help alleviate the problem.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

I wouldn't buy a Toshiba if I was you not if you want the laptop to work for more than a couple of months... I'd go with Sony or Fujitsu Siemens.
Sounds like you only have a software problem though, the laptops not that old at all. It just needs a little health check.
Firstly uninstall any programs that you don't need any more (click Start, control Pannel, Add or Remove Programs, uninstall as appropriate)
Then download some free utilities that will help a whole lot.
Firstly get CCleaner from here: http://www.ccleaner.com/ and install use both the cleaner and the registry tools. If your not that great with computers its prob best to read through the quick tour here: http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour/1-after-installation
Also download Defraggler from here: http://www.defraggler.com/ once you have installed this, just click analyze, wait for it to finish, then click the tick box on the top left of the list (next to 'Filename') to select all the files (make sure all the files have a tick in the box to the left of them) and click Defrag.
Also you can increase your virtual memory which will speed up your comp without you having to buy any extra RAM.
Right click on 'My computer'
click Properties,
click on the Advanced Tab,
in the performance section click 'settings'
click on the advanced tab and at the bottom under 'Virtual memory'
click change, increase the min amount to something like 1024 and the max to 1792. (I'm assuming the min was at somewhere round 300 if the min amount its already over 1000 then I wouldn't make any changes at all)
CLICK SET (you must click set or it will ignore any changes that you have made)
Click Ok on all windows (should be 3 windows)
If after you have done all of this its still no faster you can try reinstalling windows but I wouldn't attempt that unless you know what you are doing.
Sorry for the long post, I know it looks complicated but it will save you spending £400 on a new laptop and its not that hard if you follow it through step by step.
Hope this helps!
(it tool me a bit long to write this post I see someone has already suggested ccleaner lol)0 -
Ncks, Backup all your work and use the restore cd or the win(xp)?? installation disc or..there might be a restore function locked away in a second partition on the harddrive, maybe called "D" drive (not the d/dvd rom drive)
You need to note all the hardware and software installed on your pc. Go to www.belarc.com and download their advisor program and print out the results.
Any drivers will need to be at hand for a manual installation as would a spare pc to d/load them if any difficulty occurs.
Edit
Madden is right but it will take ages and you will not get back to a NEW condition, its still faster to reinstall from scratch, strange but true.......0
