  • Just soaked and cooked 500g dried cannellini beans and they come to 1.1kg. I think they cost 42p from Tesco.

I have to say I buy Tesco value tinned red kidney beans as they are 15p. The beans I use most are haricot beans as I love them. I find the same results as Thriftlady - 500g dried gives about a kilo of cooked. I do a whole pack at once and then freeze them in 200g packs. The liquid and remaining beans make soup.

I love dried peas - old fashioned stuff... I freeze them in 200g portions as mushy peas and make Dutch peas soup with the liquid and remaining peas. That is fab soup. They are cheap and nourishing.

I looked on the internet for an answer to this question... I was frustrated that MSE didn't have it!

However, I know it's two years too late... but people will look for this information....

3 websites I found state that 100g Dried = 400g Tinned (Before Draining)

    500g Dried = 93p
    5 x 400g Tinned = £2.40
We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy!

Look on the tin, sometime it will tell you what is the dry weight.

I think it is the 'drained' weight it gives you rather than the dry weight.

If its for use in a recipe, I would just guess it - its not going to make a big difference.

I would say, a cupful dried is about what is in a tin, approx.

Usually a cup of dried beans is the equivalent of a standard-sized can.
  • A 400g can of beans will be about 275g when drained of water. The equivalent to this in dried beans is 90g.
  • I was told that if you take dried beans and soak they end up as 3 times the weight

eg: 100g dried beans becomes 300g once soaked
    75g dried becomes 225g
