has anyone been charged to leave bt.
just had final bill due to moving and there is a one off charge of £90 odd quid.
to me it looks as though in january they changed my plan and because im leaving are charging me the above.

I wanted to ask a similar question my mother in law is leaving bt for a rival company and they are demanding £150 dissconnection fee is this legal, they say its a breech of contract but she has been with them for 40 years thereabouts0

I'd call up to clarify on the charges, but i can hazard a guess that at least £70 of it is a cancellation charge for leaving the service during a term of contract.
Call up though, as they'll have the definitive answer.0 -

thanks normanmark, its £156.00 to be precise, and whats the £70 for, shes been on the same contract with them for numerous years, or are bt sending out gobbeldegook letter to OAP's hoping they won't understand them, and if they don't reply within 28 days they are signed up to a contract like it or not is this the case???
I will call them to find out, but they can't justify those charges to an OAP (what's the other £86.50 for?) who is only changing to save money, can anyone else shed some like on these charges, if i don't get a good reply i will be ringing ofcom I HAVE THEIR NUMBER thanks to another thread.0 -
I think its been around a year now that anyone on the service is committing to a 12 month contract. If she's got a BT bill the T&C's are stated on the reverse (If i recall). Personally it'll be difficult to get out of that charge, OAP or not, the rules are the same for everyone.
Like i said, no one here can answer the questions you want answers for. I'm merely speculating that if she's moving away one of the charge (at most £70) is down to leaving the contract within the 12 month period. The only people who can tell you EXACTLY what the charges are, are the people who hold the account, which is BT. Not people on this forum0 -
phoned bt today.
the charge is for leaving the contract early when i changed my payment plan in november.
when i was offered this i wasn't told it was a new contract i entered into, as i wouldn't have done it knowing i was moving .
they really are con artists.
im going to fight it as much as i can.0 -

Are you saying you changed the way you paid or changed the calling plan?0 -
they are saying i changed my payment plan to free weekend and evening calls in november.
when i spoke to them today i asked what 10th jan on my bill against the charge was and they said that is when my contract would be up next jan surely if they are saying i changed it in november then the 12mth would be up november 08.
i really cant remember agreeing to this, as normally when they phone they won't deal with me as account in husbands name.
as house was up for sale at the time i can't see that i would have agreed to a new 12 mth contract.
and when i asked for disconnection not at any time did they advise about this charge, else i would have stayed with them until end of contract. as it is i am now signed up with someone else.0 -
So basically what has happened is you changed your calling plan to free evening and weekend calls, this plan had a minimum term, and as you cancelled it before the minimum term was up they are charging you the difference outstanding.0

A lot of customers forget about verbal agreements they have made etc, but you receive a letter containing the contract terms and the fact that you've signed up to a new calling plan in the post, or at least you should do.0

Hi, I've had the same problem with BT. We had to get a line installed because we wanted sky. I called BT saying i immediately wanted to sign up to sky, they said this was fine. No mention that I was actually entering into a twelve month contract, or signing up to an option, so i went ahead a signed up with sky, next thing you know I've got a £70 bill from BT for apparently a break of contract. Have queried this with them to be told basically 'tough luck' and its a charge for everyone. I'm currently complaing to the telecommunications ombudsman but meanwhile BT are threatening legal action because I refuse to pay.
Has this happened to anyone else? Surely BT are misleading their customers by not informing them they are entering into a verbal agreement ??(I was even told over the phone its fine to swap immediately to sky)
Its my first time on the forums so any help would be grately appreciated!!0
