I have lost count of the number of drain covers i have made. 6mm durbar (steel chequer plate) is normally more than enough for normal vehicles. The mill scale will stop it rusting to a point, but a nice thick coat of black paint
    will last many years.

Stainless chequer is perhaps a bit over the to for a drain cover.

Thanks for the great advice everyone.

Can I just ask, so if I go into a blacksmith and ask him/her to cut me a piece of durbar 20in x 26in x 6mm they will know what I mean?

Also where do I find a blacksmith? Have looked in yell.com in my area with no joy. Are they called something else?

Just type in 'fabricators' to yell.com

Your looking for something like 'sheet steel workers' or 'engineering fabricators'.

Small companies are better as they are likely to have more time for you as a 'one off' customer.

A fabrication company rather than a blacksmith is the place to go.

    look up 'steel fabricators'

Durbar, tread plate, steel chequer... theyll know what you want.

If its not being folded, a bit thicker than 6mm wouldnt go amis, or get some flat bar welded on the underside.

Id knock you one up, but not the easiest thing to post ;)

    1. so cast iron (original one) magically doesn't rust.?
    2. sheet steel is cheaper than paying a builder to re-fit an entire new unit.
    3. heavy yes but safe, how many years will it take 1/2steel to rust through.

The OP cant find one and has an open hole so steel will do the job quite happily
