Waxing can be expensive, but you get longer lasting results. Many salons have half price days which reduced the cost.
I use an epilator on my underarms and lower legs, hot wax on my top lip (much less painful that wax and strips) and get my top legs and bikini waxed professionally (can reach as well)
I have to epliate on a weekly basis, but waxing is generally once every 6/8 weeks.
To help with the pain take a couple of painkillers half an hour before hand and waxing during your period is a no no, Hurts much much more.

My dd is also quite dark haired and pale skinned, and at the age of 10 is developing a "mono brow":( and a bit of a "moustache":(

My DD has a bit of a monobrow thing happening but just a little bit, so I don't pluck it, but I give the hair a trim with nose hair scissors every once in a while to stop it looking so dark. I wouldn't bother, but I knoe once kids pick up on something they can be left with the label for a long time (eg the third Gallacher brother?)

If when she's older the hair does grow inj coarsely then I'll tell her to do what I did when I first plucked my eyebrows - put a generous smear of germolene on it for 15 minutes to let the local anaesthetic effect kick in, then wipe ot off one eyebrow at a time and get plucking! No pain then!;)

I really recommend Silky Mitt too.
I used it throughout upper school, to survive PE lessons (more specificly catty girls in changing rooms!)
I've seen other friends who shaved instead, and few years on it takes its toll! you get this 'chicken pimple' effect on the hair roots, and it grows back blunt and rough!
plus it's 99p for a pack of 3! at Savers, Bodycare and possibly superdrug :-)

    Hi

I have dark hair (Italian father) and started shaving my legs when I was 11 (Year 7). A lot of my friends did it a fair bit earlier. But I lived overseas and spent a lot of time (daily) in a swimsuit. Underarms much earlier - I was 9 and just did it without telling my Mum with her/Dad's razor.

I'm not sure whether I'd have a chat or not. I think I probably would. More from the point that as women get older this is one of the things that they like to do (??) and she might notice other girls having no hair on their legs at school. And then just say that you want to minimise her being self conscious about such things so to talk to you if/when she wants to go down the hair removal route.

I would suggest bleach for her facial hair unless it is really thick and needs removing?

And waxing as soon as possible. Sadly this means DIY since I believe you need to be older to go to a salon. I'm not a fan of shaving. It certainly makes matters worse.

Epilators are also good, from experience. Not painfree, but time efficient.

I had laser hair removal a couple of years ago. Very expensive. But fabulously life changing. And I am going to offer to pay for my girls when they are old enough to have it done. 16/18 from memory. I really hope they go for it (if they need to).

I think the Silky Mitt things are quite successful when the hair's still relatively soft - know a few people whose girls are using them and they seem to be a good middle ground.

I was desperate to shave my legs from around age 11 - I didn't have much hair, but it seemed like every other girl in the PE group was shaving, so naturally I was singled out. Took me forever to approach my Mum, who wasn't best pleased by the idea anyway - and that was only after a few incidents of dry shaving unassisted out of desperation! Semi hairy legs, rashes and nicks - not a good look.

Can I ask how much is "very expensive" ?

Or maybe get her a few things, yanno, cream/razors, deodorant, tampons & give her it as a sorta prezzie lol just say to her Here I got you some things you might need at some point! Or you could let her see you defuzzing yours & see if she says anything.

This advice seems the best way i would do this,i dont remember when my dd1 did hers ,although they quite young these days,my sis kids are 15,and 13 and the youngest was shaving at 9.You dont want her going to secondary having the mickie taken outa her, once that starts it just escalates,so best to start as she means to go on.Hair free.!

think i will try this, thanks very much!! and thanks to everyone who replied - as a single parent it is great to have other opinions!

just to finish, the other morning she shouted me into the bathroom, where she showed me something on her leg. now, bear in mind it was orange and looked supiciously like paint, when she uttered "perhaps it is my period"!

    Of course :)

I did mine on a pay as you go basis and it was c £200 per treatment for full leg and bikini. And from memory another £65 for underarms.

My Mum & sister did it at the same time and bought a 6 treatment package which was c. £1500-2000 for legs, bikini and underarms. It was a package deal with an additional 25-50% discount for the third treatment area (underarms).

The recommendation is 6-8 treatments and from experience is accurate.

So depending on how many areas you wish to treat, the price varies. The danger, financially speaking is that once you see the benefits, it becomes addictive - you know the odd hair on your toe or few barely noticeable ones on your fingers etc that in an ideal world wouldn't be there! You can have pretty much anywhere treated (apart from eyebrows) from upper lip, chin, neck, whole face, nipples etc. Men can have it done too.
