Moving back to BT but line not working

Finally got fed up with Virgin Media and am now looking to move over to Sky. At the same time, we now need to get our old BT line up and running but, surprise surprise, the line isn't working so we have to fork out £124.99 for an engineer. Sky have said that they will reimburse the cost but it still means finding the money to do it in the first place.

I've had a quick look inside the Master socket and there's only a couple of connected wires in that but all looks okay. However, there is another small box by the window - I have no idea what this is or how it's meant to be wired.

£124.99 is a hell of a lot of money for what would probably be a 10 minute job for a BT engineer, so a DIY fix would be the best option if possible.

Has anyone else managed to fix their 'faulty' BT line?

    It will have been disconnected somewhere between your house and the exchange and/or at the exchange. It's not a DIY job (not unreasonably, BT don't allow others to tamper with their network).

    If Sky want to pay, let them - but don't let them take over your line rental (tell them you only want Sky Talk as a CPS service) because then you'll be in breach of contract with BT and will have to pay a penalty charge, will also be subject to Sky's excessive 0845/0870 call costs (and won't be able to avoid them by using the 1280 prefix) and may not be able to use indirect access providers like 18185.
    Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    How have you got sky to do that? ?

    I am also thinking of going off v media and onto BT and when i phoned today they said they had an offer on for reconnection (have a phone line but no dial tone) £62.50 but eeekkkk i would rather not pay anything to be honest as they make so much money

    The line will more than likely need re connected in the exchange, and could also require being reconnected in a couple of places between the exchange and your house. it may take 5 mins it may take all day
