Neighbours satelliete on my property

Options
Thought I would get other people's opinion on this before I lose my temper with neighbours and Sky.

I own an upstairs maisonette and new neighbours have recently moved in downstairs. I arrived home yesterday to find that they had a satellite installed close to the roof (as you would expect), however, the upstairs of the property belongs to me and I now have a very unattractive dish attached to my wall.

Not only did the neighbours not ask my permission to do this, Sky did not check to see if they were able to do this.

I don't want to start off on the wrong foot with my neighbours but surely they can't fix things to my property when they feel like it, very tempted to phone Sky and tell them to take it down!!!!

As a dfw was thinking of charging them rent for the dish to up my income he he x

you are correct, they dont have permission to do it, however can i just say sky instalaters can be quite brisk, my last one was very surley and threated to rip out all the new cables if i complained about the positioning, he was a contractor and sky did dock his pay but i was very intimidated, perhaps your downstairs had and equally bad experiance.

If your Maisonette is leasehold, then there may be restrictions that don't allow dishes etc to be fitted without the permission of the landlord. may be worth checking as then it wont be you complaining.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

On the plus side - you've got a free dish! Feel free to take it down and stick it on Ebay. Or cut the cables and run new ones into your own house.

How inconsiderate of your neighbours - I wouldn't dream of doing something like that!

That's what I was thinking. If a building is divided into upper and lower, it sounds like they are both leasehold. In which case the external walls belong to the freeholder not to either of the individual maisonettes. The freeholder may or may not be bothered - the OP can bring it to their attention, but it's their call.

As said, unless you own the leashold then the walls dont belong to you. Everything inside your flat is yours, but on the outside, its the landlords. So speak to the landlord to get it removed.

Thanks for all of your advice.

Think I will not say anything to them for now if they try anything else I may take nej's tactic x

Plenty of good advice there.
There's another thread in the forums about getting Sky in more than one room, although Sky would not approve you can add an extra cable to the dish and get Sky for free; unlike using one of those receiver boxes (they're about £20) it would allow you to watch a different channel to your neighbors.

I don't think your neighbors meant any harm but they were impolite and selfish in not asking you if it was okay to put up a dish.

I thought about this more last night. The maisonette is leasehold but the leaseholer (according to my lease) does not carry out any maintanance on the property (the lease payment is only £70 per year) and I have to have my own building and contents insurance. If the installation of their sky dish causes damage to the upstairs walls inside or out would I not then have to claim on my insurance?

Surely if this is the case i should be able to object to having anything installed?
