WARNING... Late Payment may lead losng 0%!

I had a 0% deal with MBNA. I paid on Direct Debit, and over the Easter Weekend the payment was two days late. Not only did they charge me £12.00, but have also removed my 0% offer - permanantly! Apparently this is all theT&C's - but I issed it in the small print! Anyone else had a similar problem? Any Suggestions?

I would call them up and express some concern that a DD was taken late.

If it was the first time, they may well relent and re-instate your promotional period.

Generally, they will allow one mistake but if it should happen again you will almost certainly lose the promotion.

Sorry- It's normal practice, the banks rely on a percentage of people not paying to increase their profits. The 0% is a loss leader.

I had a similar thing on my Virgin card, I paid my bill on the internet and it was late due to the Friday and Monday being bank holidays, so I got the £12 charge and lost the 0%.

I've just got off the phone to Virgin, I explained the situation and they have reinstated the 0%, they are also refunding the intrest I paid and the £12 so i'm very happy, I never even had to hassle them, the Customer service fellow put me straight through to the interest department who sorted it straight out.

To be honest I thought i was chancing it a bit as I was in the wrong as I should have allowed some extra days but i forgot, i've now set up a DD for the minimum to avoid future problems.

I'm surprised your DD was taken early rather than late on a bank holiday.

They are fully entitled to charge you for the late payment, record your payment late to the CRA's and withdraw any offer linked to your account if you fail to adhere to the T&C's. As a measure of goodwill they may reinstate the offer, but they are not obliged to.

However, If this was done by a DD then the onus is on them to collect the funds on time, therefore none of the above will apply.

If the payment was made by you using any other means, i.e cash/cheque/BACS transfer/Standing Order etc then the onus is on you to ensure payment reaches them in time and you are liable.

    Was it a DD ?

Quite a few people here have been caught out by missing a payment and losing their 0%. Usually fixed by a phone calling and asking if it can be reinstated. If not, phone them again a bit later and ask again.

My husband did that and got it re-instated as he was a bit of wally and did not set up a DD with the credit card. Again run by MBNA.

Never had a problem with any other card issuer.

I had sky card fail to take 2 DDs in a row. Both times charged, 0% removed. Both times I phoned up and they admitted the problem was at their end and they refunded the fee. They forgot to reinstate the 0% so the next month they charged me interest. Again, it was sorted after a quick phone call.

Smell the coffee peeps - first time poster spouting on about something that cannot happen unless a fault by MBNA.
If that was the case they would put customer back to position as if payment was received on time.
