    @davidlizard

    http://www.phishfighting.com does something like you mention though without the spoofing I believe.

    There was an Israel based project called the Blue Frog that worked against normal spam (pharmaceuticals, fake watches etc.). The spammers hit back and the project got shut down:

    I get at least 5 phishing emails every single day. I wouldn't click on them even if they are from places I bank with.

    To be honest, the spelling is so poor, they are clearly not written by large corporations, the URLs are wrong, the email addresses don't make sense, most of the time you don't even bank with those places...the list is endless. I'm surprised that people are surprised when they recieve them!

    ' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

    Cheers Marshall2k - I think it was the Blue Frog one I was thinking of. Looks like there is little work being done these days sadly.

    I am surprised that some of the financial institutions are not more pro-active in directly dealing with the phishers. For example, a bank with millions of on-line customers could ask each to opt into a program where their PCs could be used to flood the phishers websites with fake data as and when required, or even go as far as hitting the phishers with DDoS attacks. Probably not legal though!

    I am sure someone could come up with some ingenious but nasty way to nullify these phishers if need be, perhaps using the vast numbers of customers PCs at their disposal!
  • It's worth reiterating a point made in response to someone saying " I just click on the 'report phishing scam' link at the top of the email." Never, ever, click any links in these emails. If you do you'll either end up with much more spam or nasties installed on your computer.

    However, people must take some responsibility for their actions as these emails are part of online life. If I got a genuine email from my bank which said "''We demand that you take 5 minutes out of your online experience..." I would promptly close my account due their blatant rudeness! Banks would never use such language as it's both rude and unusual.

    I think they meant clicking the "report phishing" link on the email provider page like hotmail or googlemail.
