WARNING-Phishing Email pretending to be Natwest!!

Hi guys,

As a dedicated regular of this forum, I am warning everyone of the latest Phishing email that unfortunately I was victim to today!!

I was a Natwest customer up until October last year, when I closed my account as I no longer used it and I have been banking elsewhere. This is the one factor that alarmed me into realising this is almost 100% likely to be a fake! And the regulars on here know me and my background so you know I am telling the truth here!

I had an email today that looked suspicious telling me that something was wrong with my account online....I will paste part of the last bit below....

''We demand that you take 5 minutes out of your online experience and renew your records to avoid running into any future problems with the online service. However, failure to update your records will result in your account suspension''

There was then a link to click on highlighted in blue saying 'sign on')-it diverted you to a strange URL-looks exactly like the Natwest log on page, only the left hand menu options are different and the fake site shows as OnLine Banking-rarther then the legitimate site that shows as Online banking (no upper case at start of 'line)

I wanted to warn everyone that I have reported this to Natwest's Fraud Team-they dealt with things really well and they gave me the following inbox to forward the email to....

phishing@natwest.com

I am very fortunate that I work in the banking industry and I can spot these things from a mile off, but it sickens me to the stomach that these good for nothing, low-life fraudsters are going aroung, frightening people into giving their details in this way. As you can see, it encourages you to log on via the blue link, which is evidently a fake because if you compare it to the legitimate site-you can tell is not's the official site.

If anyone is worried or wants to report the same email you may of received (mine was to my private yahoo address) then please forward to Natwest or call the Fraud number I rang which is 0845 300 3983.

Please be vigilant and report this email if you have it-these discusting cretins will send out thousands in bulk to try and con us and it's absolutely shocking-sad thing is, some poor soul will fall for it and it just not fair!

Hope this helps at least one person who's had this email and is unsure.

NatWest, Halifax, Nationwide. They are a daily occurrence.

GOLDEN RULE - never click on a banking link from an email. Type the known web addy instead or use your favourites. Same goes for any site that has financial data of yours - ebay, paypal etc.
  • Oh completely-if i knew I still had an active account I would NEVER of clicked that link-it's purely because I don't have accounts there so there's nothing to steal from that I checked it out-just so I knew and so I could warn people. But it is still an issue that people are not always aware of....for example a colleagus of mine who works in the banking industry actually gave out bank details....AND THAT A BANKING PERSON....so what chance do vulnerable people have. It's just mindblowing that fraudsters think they can get away with it! Shocking!

  • me 2, been getting them for months now..natwest, allience & L, bank of scotland..i just click on the 'report phishing scam' link at the top of the email. The reason I know they really junk is because I no longer have a bank account! If any kind soul on here knows what more to do with them pls post and I will try it. Im really getting sick of getting them every single day xmyx
  • This is my 1st time of having one to be honest-but it's incredibally annoying isn't it!! I don't see why it can't be traced back to the URL that it took me to or trace it back to the server-something to bring these idiots to justice!

Don't send them on to the individual Banks .... send them to the dedicated site set up by APACS. You still won't get an acknowledgement ... but at least they're consolidating all the various types :

    http://www.banksafeonline.org.uk/report_scam.html

No point getting upset / uptight about them ... they're a sad by-product of the scum laden society that affects us all. I do appear to have diminished my 'phishing' mails considerably over the last 18 months ...... so they've now started with the Viagra ones in their place! Anyone know anywhere to send them on to?
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

I recommend you don't even do that. The reason is that by so doing you are confirming that your Email addy is valid. This means they can sell it on to other scammers.

I vaguely remember there is (or was?) an Israeli based website where you could forward the phishing emails to, and they would then, with the help of their network of volunteers, bombard the spoofed banks website with millions of fake user names, passwords and other log in details. This meant the phishers would receive millions of fake log in details, meaning anyone who had been misled into entering their details would have their details somewhere in the huge forest of fakes.

They would do some fairly sophisticated stuff (IP spoofing etc ?) so it appeared all the emails originated from different PCs, making filtering very difficult.

By the time the phishers had worked their way through the list, the chances are the website would have been culled.

Does anyone know the URL for this, or what became of the project?

Unfortunately there are more of these phishing emails than could ever believe.
Be wary of poor grammer and/or spelling and in particular phrases like "we demand"/ "you must", etc.
There is a quick check however...hover your cursor over the link.
You will probably find that the drop-down link does not match that which is displayed in the email.
Another check is to click in a vacant area of the email...this will display the true destination of your reply.

    Sorry ....forgot to say....
Don't even think about clicking the link 'out of interest'.
Some of these links are viruses like data loggers or keystroke loggers.
It will not matter if you give your details....they have you!!!
