I know if I had left my money i would be devastated - thats why I want them to have it back. I didn't just want to take it to the police station because it is so unlikely that someone would hand it in that they may not contact them.

Yeah, I dont think I would bother with the police station unless I got no joy from the bank, which is unlikely lol.

Molly - you have done nothing wrong so no need to feel guilty.
The person that didn't take the cash may be on a tight budget an have no idea where they lost the money.

You should be feeling good that you are doing something positive for someone else, whether they realise they know the money is missing or not. Just tell the cashier that you used the cash machine at whatever time and this money was still there.

Well done for being so honest.

I had something similar happen when i went to the students Union on a Friday night. Someone in front of me had been asking their friend how to work the machine (1st card) put the numbers in fine but went off without their money. I ran up the stairs after them and was then faced with walking up to a table of about 7 gorgeous women - so i thought i'd make light of it.
"I saw this and thought of you" said i as i offered the money.

Umm, you left this at the cash mahine?
Oh God - thank you so much
No problem - smile - hasty retreat.

A woman I used to work with left work one lunch time to go for ante natal appointment and walked past Halifax cash machine beeping away with cash in. She picked it up and took it into the branch and they took her details. Same evening a lady came to her door with huge bouquet of flowers as a thank you!

Well done on your honest!! You could call the bank who have the machine.... or hand it into the police.. but the bank is the best bet.

    Hi Molly

Once I walked away from the cashpoint without taking my money. I only realised a couple of hours later and was gutted, as I really couldnt afford to lose it.

I went back to the bank without much hope, and was surprised and delighted that someone had handed it in. It really gave me a boost. So while understanding the temptation, I would encourage you to take it back to the bank. I'm sure you'll get some good karma points for being honest.

Thanks GeorgeUK - it feels like I have stolen it, even though I haven't!

I will let you know what the bank says tomorrow - I really hope they can trace them. I checked the time when I got in the car so I have as many details as possible to give them.

Seaxwyn - I would only keep it if I had exhausted all options - phoned bank, handed it to police etc.

I hope it gets back to its owner and i will patiently wait for the good karma to come back to me!

    Good on you.

I've done that before - arrived as a cash machine to find more than £100 there. I called the bank the next day. There was no point taking it to the police; chances are no-one would go there to ask, they'd ask the bank.

Even if you didn't have the exact time, they'll have your account details and when you accessed the ATM and therefore who accessed it before you. :)

Good on you for your honesty. Karma will repay you!

Certain machines will do that but not all of them have that function. Personally I think all machines should retract cash if not picked from the slot in 30 or 60 seconds...

Please don't worry too much tho - you didn't steal it and there wasn't anything you could do at 7 in the evening! :)
