found money in cashpoint...

whoops - posted this twice - how do i delete?

Hi everybody

I am more of a lurker than a poster, and not sure if this is the right place to post but I am hoping you could help me out.

I went to the cashpoint earlier to withdraw a tenner and someone had left their money behind. I wasn't really sure what to do, so took the money out and just stood there looking around to see if they came back for it. I withdrew my own money, then stood around for a bit more - I felt really guilty as I was holding someone else's cash and by this time I was shaking, expecting the person to come back and call me a thief!

Anyway nobody came back and so I ended up aking the money home. I am sure you can all understand how much this extra cash would help! But, my morals won't let me just keep it - I would feel too guilty so would like to try and return it.

I am going to call the bank it came from in the morning and see if they can trace and contact the person who used it before me - does anyone know if this is possible or have any other ideas on what to do?

Thanks for your help

You could always take it to the local police station

  • Contact the bank in which the cash point belongs to. They will have a data record of who used the machine before you and they can trace it. :D

Yes Molly they could trace the owner. However, if you want to comply with the law, take it to the police station, book it in as found property. After 28 days you can claim it if no-one else does. Chances are, they won't think to go to the police station as it is unexpected for someone to hand it in. But, to be truly angelic the bank is the most honest way. It wouldn't change you life, so why not make some one feel all warm about the human race.

No need to be judgmental Mable - I went to the bank at 7pm so that was not an option.

They must have literally just left as any cash thats left sat there is taken back into the machine within seconds. Take it back into the branch first thing, they can find out which account it has come from.

Just think how much that money means to someone else too, my mum had this happen to her when she got in a fluster at the cashpoint and left the money, that money may be someones money to live on for the next week.

Its nice to know there are some good people out there, don't know how many other people would own up to finding money, however if it was me i would hand it in due to my morals and the fact i would be scared that the bank/police would know it was me who had taken the money! I'd phone the bank tomorrow and make someones day:D

ahem, (puts on my best phonejacker voice) "ahh tank you madame, can you just redopist into my account in the morning, which branch was it again?:D "

In all seriousness, well done on your honesty. Good to know there are some genuine people still out there.

I know if I had left my money i would be devastated - thats why I want them to have it back. I didn't just want to take it to the police station because it is so unlikely that someone would hand it in that they may not contact them.
