We only use the tumble dryer when the weather won't permit the washing to dry on the line. If it is breezy enough, it will dry between showers.
We also use the quick wash and low temperature options on the washing machine for items that just need freshening up rather than being actually dirty.

My lovely huge thick white bath towel is outside on the line right now and has been since yesterday afternoon - when it started pouring down and hasn't stopped since. English summer - bah! (glad to have a tumble dryer).0

I did this, and then it started raining! So all my washing is wet :mad:Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

wish I could, I have to use the tumble drier as I don't have enough strength in my arms to hang out washing.0

I have known of two elderly ladies with broken bones caused by slipping on a 1 inch step while going out to hang the washing.
Considering the pain and shock they were in - I would rather everybody used a tumble drier if they needed and could afford one.
I love to have washing on the line - but all too often it is raining - DH has come home and asked why nothing on line?
Growled answer is that I have taken 3 loads of washing in and out 4 times!
Hate to have stuff on radiators and got rid of the tumble drier but when I get old enough for wet washing to be a problem then I would have no hesitation in doing anything that made life safer and more comfortable."This site is addictive!"

well if you live in a flat, what else are you to do?
have wet clothes hanging round the flat on clothes horses is not ideal as the air would get damp as would the walls.0 -
My nextdoor neighbours leave washing on the line in all weathers. If it pours with rain for four days the washing stays out until it's so wet it's hanging on the grass!

Not with the windows open in the summer. Granted in winter it can get nasty if you have to dry indoors. We have a line, but dry indoors if it looks like it might rain. We use a dehumidifier in the winter (which also uses electricity I know!)0 -
I don't know any pensioners who have tumble dryers. My mum and in-laws always dry on line outside or inside on radiators/airers if it's raining. I'm the same. The only time I use the dryer is if it's raining in the summer(?!) as the washing can get a bit smelly if left on an airer. I don't like using it though as it's a condenser one in the washing machine and only dries at one temperature.0

I use my tumble drier rain or shine, why would I want to sit outside on a next day to watch washing dry? Or you wash lots of bedding, it is dry, you go to put it away to find a load of bird 'droppings' down your lovely Egyptian cotton sheets..
The thread title also implies that you don't wash the items first, very money saving0
