No, I'm not asking you to go out and tell everyone your deepest, darkest secrets... Well, you can if you want, but that's not what this is about. On Friday Age Concern launched the first Dry it on the Line Day aimed at encouraging people to hang their washing outside in the summer and not use tumble driers.

I like the sentiment. Many households, not just the elderly, could slice their summer energy bills simply by hanging out the washing and not tumble drying. I think it’s a great idea. I'd love to hear how much you save on your summer bills by doing this. Shame it rained on Friday though.

I always hang my washing outside if the weathers nice.

You can't beat the smell of freshly washed sheets. Mine are on the line as we speak.

Agree 100%. I do have a tumble, but its only for emergencies. Well...actually its in a spare room that OH uses to store various tools. If I did need it we'd have to dig it out first...that's how often we use it.

I have space for a tumble dryer, but don't have or want one. Drying outside is much better and doesn't shrink stuff!!:D

You can get your clothes outside in winter too!;)
If it was easy, everyone would do it!

No drier here either and I too love getting into a bed with freshly laundered sheets that have been dried outside.

Washing out on the line as I type, safely double pegged as the forecast this afternoon is 60 mile an hour gales, did someone say it was summer??

I always dry on the line (when it's not raining!). Love the smell.

The thing with Age Concern saying this, it's all very well if you can use your arms and hands to put the washing on the line in the first place. Many many older people get arthritis and rheumatism and have other problems with grip etc. and I wonder just how useful it is to be told this if they physically would have difficulties? That's if they can lift and carry the washing outside in the first place. Are there any special pegs made for people with grip problems? Any special help you can get with heaving a washing line up?

My flatmates use the tumble dryer during the summer even thuogh we have a massive washing line in our garden.

It does me head in as they're not the only ones paying the electricity bill.

They say it doesn't use up much electric, lol yeah right!

My bedding blowing on the line as I type. Dried two lots of clothes today so far :)

Only use Tumble dryer if pouring with rain and inundated. If heating on it goes on radiators or in airing cupboard if possible.

Why are M&S Summer school dress only iron free if Tumble dried. They are Summer dresses for goodness sake.

Magazines etc tell you not to dry outdoors if you have hayfever. Doesn't make a blind bit of difference to my hayfever though!
