E/bay & hotmail account hacked into

Some one hacked into both ac's and changed password to e/mail a/c and tried to sell a item on e/bay for £50 (IT SOLD ABOUT 20 TIMES)
but e/bay got wind of it and put a stop to it.

I am now worried. How do they get into each a/c? How did they plan to get paid? (it doesnt look like they accessed my paypal a/c)

What else should i now do (e/bay+hotmail have both been informed)

sorry if this is in the wrong forum

Kinda obvious but change your passwords and make them hard to guess. Make sure your password reminder questions and answers are not easy.

And change your password for every other site you use on the Internet too for good measure.
  • Exactly the same thing happened to my friend. He thinks someone got into his email account and found his ebay details in one of his emails.

They made bids for some fifty phones and attempted to defraud the sellers using fake paypal receipts for a fake (but plausible) escrow system.

It happens a lot. My ebay account got hacked a while ago (and I'm really careful with passwords) so it's a bit of a mystery.

As long as you're not out of pocket, don't worry about it. Make sure you're machine's clean (malware, keyloggers, etc)

normally happens through a spoof email. If you ever got one of those
"hi, I've seen your item on sale by someone else, maybe they tried to rip you off" then you click the link to login to your ebay account and the page doesn't display, bam they have your login. There are many of them about. I was an IT security consultant for a living once upon a time (paid hacker basically), and I fell for one, it dawned on me straight away and I instantly changed my passwords so I was lucky.

Don't store any passwords or details in hotmail, the most secure place believe it or not is a piece of paper locked in a drawer at home. A regular thief doesn't care about such things and wont pay it a second look and it cannot be hacked from someone outside your house!

Maybe he's a rouge eBay employee?!

I've had a hotmail account, since they were introduced, and a eBay account for the past 5ish years - never had them hacked. Fingers crossed I don't.

Check your computer for spyware, don't store passwords in e-mails and never click on an email to login to eBay from what looks like a legit. e-mail.

Only ever login to hotmail by going to: https://login.live.com
    and eBay by visiting: https://signin.ebay.co.uk/

Both are the secure login links.

Have just peeked at these - are you saying that they have been put onto someone else's account by an intruder? How weird.....Must be going to give a different paypal email to get the money I guess.

I agree with others most likely down to falling for phishing emails or have a keylogger/malware on the pc (assuming the password used wasn't really simple and the same one for all accounts which makes things easier for the criminals).

ebay/hotmail accounts don't get 'hacked' (generally ie 99.999999% of the time) people give out their details
