Cats developed a peeing in the house habit!!

Hi there,
My cat does this periodically on and off. There seems to have been 2 main reasons for it:

1) as someone else stated - he can sense another cat and is marking accordingly

2) he had a bladder infection and associated the cat litter with pain, so did it anywhere else!!

I have had success with placing a litter tray by the door (or main place of marking) and gradually moving it and also using stuff called feliway - you can by it from the vet and it makes the cat think he has marked there already.

My cat does this too periodically, usually when stressed, and (previously when she had a urine infection, BL@%*y IAMS) we just clean it up and reassure and cuddle her lots. Also changed to James Wellbeloved 3 yrs ago, which helped a lot (no more UTIs, no additives to stimulate hyper/anxious behaviour).
Anytime;)

I notice you mention Iams, my cat only eats Iams!

I am giving him anti-biotics at the moment for cystitus but he is still peeing during the night

My cats started spraying due to a combination of factors; we were having an extension which upset them and secondly because of the building work that was going on, I was using losts of cleaning products in an effort to keep the rest of the house clean. My vet said it was due to the upset of the building work combined with using products such as bleach and those that contain chlorine - makes your cat think that lots of other cats have been coming into the house and spraying everywhere! The answer; be really careful what cleaning products you use!!!!

My cat had at least 3 or 4 bouts of cystitis, we just put it down to her being a sensitive soul (she's small boned and slim). Changed to JWB on a whim really, as I'd read something negative about Iams, and our dog does so well on JWB.

Since then though, the cat is much calmer, though still pretty mad (she washes us all if given the chance:confused: ). Also since then not a single UTI/ bout of cystitis, and she's incredibly healthy generally. The extra cost of the food is more than made up for by the lack of stress, hassle, and vet bills.

Cystitis is painful and the inflammation takes time to go down, antibiotics cure bugs--not a painful, tightened, bladder. Hence the peeing in the night, it will stop in time. There's loads of info on Iams encouraging crystals in urine and UTIs.
Anytime;)

Will definately be changing his food!!

Vet mentioned crystals as the next thing if this didn't work, said that it was quite serious!

The other thing that might help (just remembered we did this), was tinned food mashed up with a bit of hot water. (Like when we have cystitis and drink lots to flush it out). The more liquid you can get in the better,
good luck
