Hi there I've recently bought a new laptop (sony vaio) its running on vista and has 2gb memory but seems slow.
It has norton security pre installed so im using that, I've also downloaded and ran spybot, adaware but these don't seem to have made any difference,
does anyone have some general tips to improve the performance of the laptop?
thanks

First port of call would be windows update. There are some updates that speed up Vista in areas such as copying, launching applications etc.
Otherwise any laptop I have ever had, norton was the first thing to be removed as it really does slow everything down - before any application, window or file is opened, it actively checks the file to make sure it is free of viruses. Sure it works well, just as you've found out - it causes performance to drop.
Then just replace with a decent non resource hungry program. AVG is good for me!0 -

I recently bought a new laptop with Vista and found it was slow as well, I actually replaced Vista with Windows XP which has made it sooo much quicker.
If switching the anti virus software does not work I would consider reformatting to XP.

By far the best defragmenting tool and is MUCH more effective than the one supplied with Windows.
Also, get Kaspersky - fantastic and doesn't slow your comp down!0 -

ditto,
bought eldest daughter new laptop for her birthday, first thing i did was uninstall norton, due to knowing it would slow the laptop down, also the software only had a licence for 6 months...... installed AVg instead..... whizzes along nowsmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

Why would a brand new computer need defragmenting?

Vista Service pack 1 out now on windows updates ,will speed up a bit.
Go to run command or search run open run type MSCONFIG
go to start-up and un tick programs not required to run at startup . If not sure either google the startup item or dont turn off.
To get a really fast laptop requires Win XP service pack 3 not vista i am afraid .

THe reason it's slow is because it's using Norton. Norton is the spawn of satan and should be the first thing uninstalled from any PC that's running like a dog.
It will also run a little slow for a couple of days whilst the hard drive gets indexed and superfetch works out what you use.
Also, there is no need to turn the laptop off..simply use Standby.0 -
handy to run decrapifier as well0
