Thanks for that! Sound great we have hundreds of elderberries growing in the field next to our house, will go and get some more tommorow!

Can you bake anything with them cakes ect?

There is a recipe for elderberry pie and jelly here: http://www.patch-work.demon.co.uk/elder.htm

Haven't tried them yet but we have a big elder in the back so hope to when I get some time. That link also has recipes for wine and port and stuff, seems very useful. Good luck :)

What can i make with elderberries, me and the kids have been and picked alot of ripe ones today, but have no idea what i can make with them.

I have heard of wine but isnt that the flowers of elderberries, not the berrys?

You can also make a lovely red wine with the berries.

You can use them like blueberries (if you have any blueberry recipes) - they are good in muffins (American Style ones)

I managed to find some elderberries last w/e, but none that I can find locally to me, boo hoo.

Anyway ... yes to the wine ... just in the process of making our first attempt :)

Oh and you can use them in crumbles like you would use blackberries.

    Can you make elderberry ice-cream?

I follow the recipe below for bramble ice-cream and wondered if it would work for elderberries?

    200ml double cream
75g sugar (up to 100g if sour fruit)
    1/2 lemon
1 lb brambles woozed up with a blender.

When I was looking I found recipes for Elderberry Vinegar, Elderberry Chutney, Elderberry Ketchup and Elderberry Catsup...all by Googling!!!!!!:D

They are very tedious to strip off the stalks though.........:o

  • I was gutted today to see that the groundskeepers have cut down the elderberry bush that i have picked from for years. All thats left is a pile of logs.:( :(

    Hi dlb,

We have an older thread asking what to do with elderberries, so I'll merge your thread with it as it helps to keep all the suggestions together. As always posts are listed in date order so you'll need to read from the beginning to see all the replies.

There are also a couple of other threads with recipes that might interest you:

Is it illegal to pick elderflowers?
