Cherished Plate help needed

Always keep the old number plates, eventually when you swap the car, the DVLA will issue you with your old number, so you will save £20 by having the plates made up already.
We've just swapped plates onto a new car and the garage sorted it all out for us, cost £80. Sounds like it will cost you more if you do it yourself.
This is not the case - DVLA fees are the same. The difference is simply whether you are swapping the number plate directly from car to car, or putting it on retention first. And that just depends on your own circumstances.
And you should not keep the old plates - the DVLA specifically ask you to destroy them. This is because someone could use them fraudulently.

Well they didn't ask me to destroy them 5 years ago and I've just saved £20!I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I have Cherished Plate on retention V778, I am posting the following to get the plate put on already registered car, these are the documents I am sending:
V778
V5C
Tax Disc information/number
MOT - n/a as 2007
do I need to complete a Form V317 ?
The V778 states "The Assignment Fee has already been paid" - do I need to pay any other fee?
thanks0 -

As far as I remember, you need to take the old MOT and the new log book to the garage which issued the MOT and they will amend it to show the new number plate to match the new log book.
I can't recall anything to do with DVLA regarding the MOT alteration.
The DVLA do the MOT bit, I've just been through it all.0
