The amended MOT and Tax disc would have come from local DVLA office within 7-10 working days of you making the application. In the same envelope as the certificate that tells you you can put old plate back on (V948). If you don't have this ring DVLA on 0870 240 0010 and they will send your details to the local office for them to re-issue it for you.

    Hi
As far as I remember, you need to take the old MOT and the new log book to the garage which issued the MOT and they will amend it to show the new number plate to match the new log book.

I can't recall anything to do with DVLA regarding the MOT alteration.

This is not correct. You should receive revised documents from DVLA as per my previous post. You should get everything in the post. Chase it up with DVLA.

I am 100% sure it is correct! I have done it myself. I went to my local DVLA when I wanted to transfer my personal number plate. They took the old log book after giving me a New Keepr's slip stamped and showing the car is re-registered private number plate and gave me a new tax disc with the cherished number plate and a letter in which they are asking me to take to the local motor factor when I purchase my new plates.

They asked me to take the MOT to the issuing garage to amend the number plate to the new one. I took the MOT certificate with the new log book to the garage and they re-issued a new certificate displaying the private number plate.

This is correct. Your way can be another correct! For what I know and done, this is the way to do it!

I work for DVLA and correct procedure is that the DVLA local Office issue the replacement MOT following a number plate transfer/retention.

In the old days of handwritten MOT's they stamped with an official stamp and wrote "re-registered as........", and with the new computerised MOTs they just re-print them with the new reg mark.

So, since you work for the DVLA, could you please let me know the possible reason that your colleagues didn't re-issue the MOT certificate for me when I had the new electronic ( computerised) version of MOT at the time? Why did they asked me to go to the issuing garage to get an amended one?

    Thanks

Can't explain why you were asked to go to your local garage.
We deal with registration numbers on a daily basis. And I agree with flutterbyuk25 - the DVLA reprint the MOT certificate with the new registration on it. As well as the tax disc.
None of our customers have ever been asked to return to their garage to get a replacement MOT.

Always keep the old number plates, eventually when you swap the car, the DVLA will issue you with your old number, so you will save £20 by having the plates made up already.

We've just swapped plates onto a new car and the garage sorted it all out for us, cost £80. Sounds like it will cost you more if you do it yourself.

I don't know why either! When I went to the DVLA local office, I was expecting them to do it for me. I remember being a bit surprised when I was asked to take the MOT certificate to the issuing garage to amend it, but, what do I know compared to the staff! Could it be at their discretion? Or could it be a technical fault and sending the customer to the issuing garage was an alternative at the time? Could it be the staff member who dealt with didn't know better and the garage coincedently could do this, but not meant to, and they did it to keep one of their customers happy? I remember the girl over the desk at the Ford garage saying we need to take it to the DVLA, but we assured her we were asked by the DVLA to come over to the MOT station where the certificate was issued to get it re-printed with the new number plates. She went inside to ask somebody and came and said it is ok and they will do it and got it back in 20 minutes!

As I siad before, for what I know and what I have done, it is correct! Your way is appearntly another correct or a more common correct!

Not necessarily! I enquired about this at the time, and they told they might or they might not, depending on what is available at the time when you want to have a normal number plate displayed ( normal to you, of course)

They said if I wanted the original number to be re-issued to the car at a later date, I would need to pay £105 to retain that number!

    This is the answer below.
To transfer it straight from one car to another you need form V317, both V5C's, Both MOT's, details of both tax discs and £80

It will cost you more if the garage you are buying the car from doesn't deal with number plates transfer. The OP needed to do it themselves by retaining the number plate and then assign to the new car when they buy it. It will cost £25 more do it this way.

No idea why. Unless they had technical fault and could not re-issue it there and then for you.

Very odd that you were asked to do that, never heard of it before.
