accept high offer or let auction run?

Hi all. I've been bugging this board with niggly questions all week - got another one!

My high value item is ending today. Not yet met the reserve - but have 17 bidders and nearly 40 people watching. Have had a couple of emails asking for a BIN price or making me an offer - but those people have not bid.

Got an ebay buyer willing to pay cash today as a deposit £200 over the reserve price, and another one who is willing to pay £1000 over our reserve price with a paypal £400 deposit. What do i do???? Want to get as much as possible for it but don't want to lose a genuine buyer (has viewed it in person twice!) in case the one offering more money doesn;t work out. Or if we let the acution end and sell it for just over the reserve price - will be gutted.

anyone got experience to help us make decision? only got a few hours to go!
many thanks....

be very careful. Unless you stop the auction and make it a BIN you arent covered by paypal.

I've had a lot of offers to end auctions - some are from the competition - some will simply screw you out of your money through paypal.

Most watchers will bid at last minute and you'll be covered by paypal. Let it run. These two cash buyers have probably watched other autions and seen the final price rocket.

Let it run (and the very best of luck for a great price!). If these outside offers did not complete for whatever reason you would be really annoyed.
  • I say let it run as well. I had an item at a buy it now price of £50, plus also bidding. As people started bidding, the buy it now price option went of course, I then had a few people offer me £50, which is what i wanted for it, but i turned them down, choosing to let it run its course.

With 5 minutes to go my item was only at £26 and i was regretting my choice to not accept the £50, then all of sudden my 12 people watching went into a bidding war and it sold for £70.

I know its not as much over your price you're after, but just goes to show if you have a high amount of watchers, anything can happen.

i think you should let it run. in any case, the people who offered you those amounts are likely to bid and so you'll probably get at least that amount, but probably more

    good luck :)

Either you have seriously undervalued your item, or you have a lot of casual scammers sending you messages.

Think about which one it's likely to be ;)

I would let it run too its often
    just people who are scammers
who do this.if they want it so bad
let them bid along with everyone else.
You have more chance of getting
your money with bidders than you have
with these people who make over the top
    offers.

Depends what the item is if its a phone then its probably scammers, but if its memorabilia (sp?) could be genuine.

Thank you so much for your speedy and detailed replies! Spoke to hubby, and he said the same thing - thought it was unfair to people who have been bidding to suddenly add a BIN price (don't even know if we could!)

Reserve has now been met, and had a couple of more questions from people, so fingers crossed. At last we know what we'll get as a minimum
Many thanks for the good advice!

you have a reserve price for a reason! :) if you hit the reserve then good, if you get over it then even better!

hopefully it goes for high amounts of money! :)
