nero 6 problems

Hi I have a xp sp2, pentium 4 home pc, bought from comet in oct 2002, it has 40gb hard disk (half of which I have free space). I have all the xp updates, antivir, spybot - adaware, etc.

recently I was given an oem copy of nero 6 from a man who came to replace my cd drive a few months ago. Up until then I only used wmplayer 10 to burn my cds, but on using nero was blown away by the speed (2-3 minutes!) compared to wmp. I was then given a dvd rewriter for my birthday which my brother installed for me (its internal) chuffed everything going well.

Then one day Nero 6 reloaded (i updated my oem copy on the website and got the full version - everything - all the packages) stopped working! If I try to open startsmart it opens and closes immediately saying nero has encountered a problem and has to close. when I click on the error it says something like appcompat.txt. I have uninstalled nero, reinstalled and uninstalled then used clean tools, and emailed neros tech support section using their info tool. I emailed neros tech section first about 10 days ago, and have had 2 emails from them. One saying I had drivers left over from roxio easy cd, and the one yesterday saying I had the old version of nero 6 on my computer. (this because I followed their advice in their previous email to me!) I updated it anyway today just in case, no joy startsmart refuses to open.

This I found a little irritating as I have installed and uninstalled nero probably around 6 times or more now and I feel they are not answering or helping me with my query except with stock replies. Also they take around 3 days to answer an email. I have emailed them today stating that I am unhappy with the two emails I have had so far telling them my lack of success in getting startsmart up and running. But I am desperate now and wondered if any of you technical people have any suggestions I could try.

I have googled this and it seems to be a common problem with nero 6 but I cannot find a fix.

I can play and burn cds in my cd rewriter, on wmp 10, i can play my dvds but cannot burn my backup as nero will not work. If i have left any thing out or you would like more info please tell me. I have tried a number of fixes for this, but I am not an advanced computer user so please help me!! if you can!

I don't have much experience with Nero 6, but if all else fails you could always take a look at Deepburner, which is a great (free for basic version) CD/DVD burning package.

Can you clarify if it stopped working immediately after you updated? If not, did you install/uninstall any other programs between updating and burning failure.

Also what is the make and model of your cd/dvd burning hardware?

Cheetahburner gets very good reviews and is well worth a look. It is shareware but not expensive.

OEM copies are tied to the CD writer that it came with, there is a possiblity that the OEM copy you had worked ok with the original drive and also worked ok with the new drive you had fitted, but it could be that since you've updated Nero has identifed that the OEM code you have used is not linked to the CD drive you have.

I have come across this myself, the only work around is to either fit the drive the code works for, purchase a new code or ahem....you think about it.

It may be because you updated it and the copy he had was a ahem 'copy' a friend of mine did that and it stopped working

hi ok it did not stop working immediately after I updated I think it was about 2-3 weeks after it stopped working. I don't think I did install other programs I might have uninstalled though to be honest I am not really sure...

my cd hardware is aaopen and my dvd is ultima electronics artec internal 16x dvd+/-rw model vpp-16d40w

Can you post a copy of the appcompat.txt text file. I believe this file is the one that is sent to Microsoft and contains error information. It can be found here:

C:\DOCUME~1\yourusername\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER7b4e.dir00\appcompat.txt

Just use windows explorer to browse to this file - note yourusername is your own username e.g. bob etc

Ok you have located the file which is good. To get to it you can:

Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and in the address bar copy and paste the following:

C:\Documents and Settings\Saffron1\Local Settings\temp

This 'address' shows your folder hierarchy - C: is the hard drive, on C: there is a Documents and Settings folder, inside this a folder called Saffron1 and so on.

This will take you to your temp folder; in this folder (according to your previous post) you will find the file you are looking for (3fd4_appcompat.txt). Take a copy of your file and paste it to your desktop for ease of location.

hi thanks for your reply I do not know how to get to windows explorer I go to my computer all the time but there is no address bar? there is only the search facility I have tried a couple of times to find this file using search but am having no luck. I know I am probably missing something obvious but if you could describe how to get to windows explorer step by step I would appreciate it. thanks

ps have just had a thought a cleanup programme like cccleaner of cleanup may have cleared it from the temp folder? maybe?
