I never use a anti static wrist band and never had a problem.

But I am carefull what I wear at the time and do not work in a carpeted area and I earth myself on a bare radiator plug.

I also have a lead with no fuse in and have that connected to the computer and wall socket sometimes, so every time I touch the computer case I get earthed.

If I was you I would put the old ram back in taking care to fit it correctly and double check, my guess is you may not have fitted it correctly.

As the other guys have said hopefully just not seated correctly. Dunno what instructions you have followed but here's a guide which might help - http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/install-laptop-memory.htm . Also worthwhile going to youtube and searching videos for "upgrade laptop memory" to see how it's done.

Unlike regular PC DIMMs, SODIMMs for laptops are installed on an angle and then leaned down into the latches, insert the notch in the contact edge matching the key in the laptop memory socket.insertion angle, about 30 degrees over the horizontal, push the SODIMM down against the latches on the laptop motherboard, which engage in the notches. Make sure the module locks in to place.

I would imagine you have failed to locate the dimm and engaged the latches.

If in doubt try and ground yourself,Some people generate more static than others.I worked in an industry that lost in excess of 200k product per year caused by static damage in manufacturing .

All the years I have been doing stuff with computers I have never used a anti-static strap. Never had a problem with it.

But I have come across someone who can brake a computer by just being in the same room as it!
Ok thats fine, but I know a guy at work who said the same thing as you, he destroyed a brand new quad core xeon server cpu worth over £1000, oops...
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Hope you have a high value series resistor in there connected to the earth, because if the wiring is faulty, you may become part of the circuit.
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)

Does the laptop boot to bios with no ram in it?

If it doesn't you may have to look else where for the problem.

Also what it the noise it makes?

Do you mean if i take the RAM out and switch it on do I get some writing on the screen?:o I haven't tried this but will if it might lead to a diagnosis.

:confused:I will post if it does
Also what it the noise it makes?A disk spinning noise

I haven't opened the laptop up again since posting. I plan to buy one of those anti static straps and take another look to double check the RAM is seated properly although from the comments and links to pics I'm pretty sure it is already. Thanks for all the help so far I will post back when I've got my wrist strap and had another look.
